Re: Repower Dilemma

Won't work, the 3.0L engines were never used with that transom plate, and there isn't any exhaust tube that would hook up to a 3.0L engine. It's on the opposite side your 125's are and using 1/2 a V8 pipe would be too wide for the inline 3.0L

Thanks Don!

I've been able to find a kit that will allow me to use the 4.3's with our existing drives. You mentioned we would need to change the gear ratio on the drives to use the 4.3's. What ratio would you recommend if we decide to go that route?

Still really debating this but it's starting to look like the 4.3's with our existing drives may be the most bang for our buck.

The only thing I can add to this is that Farallon's are one hell of a serious boat.
I spent a lot time pulling yellowtail from Catalina Island on my friends 25 footer. I totally understand your love of her and I cringed when it was suggested to scrap her!
Good luck to ya Otterdiver, Tight Lines.

From what I've found Volvo used to offer a kit themselves for this purpose. One of the online engine sellers can piece the kit together. It's not exactly cheap but It's not much worse in price than the adapter plates.

This is the response they gave me regarding the kits "In the old days Volvo Penta supplied this kit, but they no longer do so. However, we put these kits together and they include everything from the engine flywheel back - the damper plate, flywheel housing, shaft, all the bearings and seals, and the miscellaneous hardware. It permits replacement of the old Volvo Blocks with the new GM blocks while still keeping the old outdrive."

I'd still probably have to re-gear the drives as the AQ125 were apparently 2.15 ... but I'll need to verify that because it's possible they used a different ratio in a twin engine configuration.

Re: Repower Dilemma

I would think twice about the Volvo diesel engines. I have an new D$ bought in 2007 with only 51 hours. Nothing but problems. The engine stalls for no reason. Very dangerous when docking. Has happened 2 out of 5 dockings. Also the trim tab malfunctions and puts the engine in save mode. Last time in Catalina. Took over 4 hours at night to get back to Oceanside. Research shows that this is not only my boat but that others are having the same problems.
