Repower my BW Striper 15?

I've got the repower itch, and I love 4 strokes.

The 87 Johnny 48SPL on it now seems to run fine, and I have a CMC 130 PT&T on there also, and an OMC tach.

But where I go (LOTW) you can get a looooong way from any marina  and you can fish all day without seeing another boat. :)

iboats has a couple of Yammy F50s for good prices (below NADA), with short warranties. One is a 2001 carbed engine, the other is a 2005 EFI. Both have PT&T.

Questions that I don't have answers to (yet):

What would be a reasonable amount I might expect to get for the Johnny, including controls and tach, and for the CMC PT&T? Should I offer them seperately or as a package?

What should I expect to pay for controls (side mount) and multi-function tach for one of the Yammies?

I guess shipping would run me around $400. Even the F50s are too heavy for me to manage by myself. Could I get it mounted and rigged for a couple hundred?

Finally, I had and dearly loved a Suzi DF70 on my 17' Whaler. I know about the Yammy only what I read in the brochure. Who has experience with this engine, carbed and/or EFI?

Any other thoughts? No, I won't buy a new engine, including an ETEC.

JB.......

You and I both know that that 87' Johnny is a fine engine. We also know that a proerly maintained engine is more important than year or brand name in most cases. And we both know you know your way around an OMC product.......

Let me refresh your memory.....
Posted by JB on July 4th 2005 at 10:44pm CST:

OMC delivered some of its best products in the 80s, including the 25 you have.
So JB I have watched this post float down towards oblivion waiting for someone else to ask the question......WHY repower?? Is whatever you put on going to make it worth the cost and added expense of shipping if you go through iboats?? or the contols and mounting $?? Idk, maybe I am just saddened to see a fine Johnny get taken away........

If you are gonna sell the Johnny, i'd personally sell the stuff seperate, as it seems like on ebay peolple make out better that way. But we both know there are guys here who sell motors for a living and their opinion is worth far more than mine.

My .02 cents.....if you are dead set on getting something else, I would go the carbed route. Thanks, PONY. :)

I am not dead set on repowering. It's just one of the things one must think about when planning a project boat and usually makes for good conversation (not here, obviously).

Once I have her on the water and well wrung out I will probably ask myself what else I could do with all those those bux. :) She could do with a new controller (beat up, but works) and the control cables are a foot or so longer than they need to be. If she checks out that may be the extent of it.

JB,

I know you've got the repower itch. But, don't be too hasty. You have time on your side.

The little 48 is a good engine and fuel economy is pretty good too. They even idle OK.

If it were me, and the engine checks out good on a test run, I would consider adding oil injection.

Not to mention what a nice paint job would do.

Since you have enjoyed an EFI 4s, I dought you will ever really be happy with a carbed 2s. I see brand new F50's @$4799 carb and $5299 EFI. Don't know how much more they are over the used you are looking at. I like to save money too, but the enjoyment of rigging an older boat with new stuff has a pleasure value beyond $$. Have fun ;)

Ok JB. You are just down the road from me. You are landlocked with maybe 20 ish miles to 3 or 4 mity fine lakes...... in all directions.

So where is this......"go all day and don't see another boat" stuff? If you don't mind me being so bold! Ok, I know. You go to the coast. You aren't one of those snow birds are you? Laugh!
----------------

Remember, with a boat you are never happy; always something else you want. Grin

Mark

Yeah, JRJ.

I think anyone starting a project boat starts by thinking how it would be with every little thing just perfect.

We all end up making a few compromises here and there.

I can do everything else without repowering, then make the repower decision after a bit of time on the water.

Still, it's important and fun to study the possibilities. For example:

She is rated for 70HP.

Some people are powering their BW 15s with Yamaha 90 2 strokes because "that engine is only 70ci and weighs about the same as most EFI 4 stroke 50s and the JohnnyRude 70s".

A couple of others I have read have put Merc 90s on them. That seems like a heavy engine for that boat, but it weighs less than a Johnnyuki DF70 4 stroke.

See? Those are the kind of things a careful planner needs to think about in addressing the questions of "Do I repower or not? If so, what with?". It's good brain exercise whether you do it or not. :)

I don't see you going over rated HP, but I'm a long ways away :)

After running a few 2- strokes on my 16'
runabout, i bit the bullet and repowered
with a 1999 (new to me)50hp honda.
very happy with it.
The magic number for a nearly new 50 yam,
or honda seems to run around $5000,
rigging is negotiable, but my shop charged
about $600.
the fuel economy,reliability,and performance
is top notch !
