I am repowering my 270 Sundancer with twin 5.0 liter Mercruisers (new). I live in a warm climate and am wondering if the use of synthetic motor oil would be recommended in these new engines. Does the synthetic oil give better lubrication and hence longer engine life?

Thanks

Re: Repower / Synthetic Oil

if they are brand engines you really have to use what ever oil merc recomends and follow there directions for the first oil change after the motors are broken in. if any problems come up it will be hard to get them to fix it if you dont use there recommended oil type

tommays

Bondo,

My Mercruiser Manual states that break in is the first 20 hours. Another autority says 50 hours. So which is it, 20 hours or 50 hours? What's your opinion?

Re: Repower / Synthetic Oil

I broke-in my motor for about 25hrs or so with a 30W oil,+ Changed it.......
Then took it Easy for the Next 25 or so......
After that it's been a steady diet of Mobil 1,+ a Wix Filter every 50hrs........
I Know it's Over-kill.....
But, I see Fresh Oil, as Cheap Insurance.......
Engine at 50hrs.....
Outdrive every other change......

I'm all for cheap insurance. Just consider the cost of repairs. IMHO, it's just good common sense.
