finished the compression test and it looks to me like my issue originates with the head gasket

2) 60
4) 30
6) 120
8) 115

based on this and the age of the motor I think I will go ahead and order a long block, intake, and new exhaust manifolds.

new question is: to keep the alignment process simple can I split the transmission and motor in the boat and just pull the motor?

seems it would be easiest if I dont have to mess with the transmission mounts

nope, the whole thing comes out.
while its out free up the transmission mounts.
if the original engine was a ford contact pleasure craft for the engine mounts to convert from a ford to a gm block.
that or rebuild the front stringers.
pleasure craft makes a marinized 5.7 that replaces the ford 5.0 and 5.8 engines.
