I have a 1973 bayliner super tahiti, I went out a looked at a outboard today. I found 2 early 70's chrysler motors, 1 is a 135hp and has a bad cylinder so it is the parts motor for the 120hp that runs great. I can pick up both motors for $500, a good deal. here is the question, my bayliner is rated for 105hp, so is over powering it by 15hp too much or will it be ok?

Re: Repowering question

pretty good chances that a 30+ year old motor isn't putting out anywhere close to its factory original rated power anyway.

Re: Repowering question

I don't think upping by 15hp is all that much... but if it still has the max capacities sticker you could "possibly" get some headaches from it... I would check your local states guidelines usually available from a game & fish commision...

on the note of Chrysler OB's.. I know I will tick some people by saying this, but I wouldnt use one for anything other then a real heavy boat anchor... (could be why its only 500bucks ? ) ... every single one I have had has been a total POS, and ran like garbage no matter what was done to it (if it ran at all)... just my personal opinion and experience... (Sorry really hate chryslers :) )

Good luck with whatever you decide!

i would not think of putting old unsupported motors and a boat anyway. if you are going to put an older motor, to match the vintage of the boat, go Johnson/Evinrude, that is is supported with parts.

I agree with above.

Re: Repowering question

your $500 "investment" will be absorbed by new controls and cables to match, if you can find them. Go for an old OMC

Parts are easy to find with the chryslers and they are good engines if taken care of. One other nice thing is they are really easy to work on and trouble shoot, they are basic entry level outboards and if taken care of will last a long time. You have to keep an open mind and take all opinions into account, your going to have to buy new controls for whatever outboard you buy. Do you own research get as many opinions as you can and make an informed decision.

Re: Repowering question

Those older chryslers were excellent engines from a repair perspective. Simple, and keep them in oil they may just well run forever. The only real problem is availability of PROPS. If they are earlier than 1978, then they are 2 piece lower units and props for them are getting scarce (AHEM! I just happen to have about 6) As far as 15 HP overpowering---remove the model number plate and insert a 105 plate. Cover the 120 decal. That will keep the water gendarmes off your butt.

Unless set up properly the engines were no barn burners. Serviceable and fun, but nowhere near the power of a Merc or OMC. SO: If rated for 105 and you put a Merc 105 on it, then you probably had about 120 hanging on the back. It is really just a question of semantics with those old ones.

Go Join The Chrysler Crew. Ask opinions there and look at the photo albums.

BY the way: If the only thing wrong with the 135 is the dropped cylinder, it is well worth repairing. Pistons are still available . I prefer Wiseco.
