Repowering? What size engine?

My 98' Suzuki 225 took it's final breath this weekend. I like my 99' Aquasport 215DC so I am going to buy a new motor for it. Another 225 is too expensive plus I really want a four stroke. I would like to be able to cruise @22-25kts. The boats weights 3,000lbs.

Any idea what motor I should buy? 150hp?

I talked to my local Honda dealer and they are offering low interest rates. He quoted me $14,900 for a 150hp installed with the analog gauges, controls, ect..

I would have a hard time justifying the cost of a new 4 stroke if money was tight. There are lots of good, used 2 strokes on the market from 4 stroke repowers.

Sure, you get roughly a 30% in fuel efficiency with the 4 stroke, but how much fuel do you use a season ? The oil costs for the 2 stroke are offset by the additional maintenance costs of the 4 stroke. The $9,000 or so you would save would buy a lot of fuel.

I spent $1200 in fuel and $250 in oil this summer. I'm getting about 1 mile/gal. I figure I will be able to get 3-4 mile/gal with a 150hp four stroke.

I'm not totally against a nice used 2 stroke. I am just real skeptical about it.

Boy, you are really eating it up. I get @ 1.5 MPG at cruise on my 200HP pushing my 22? W/A.

First off, your comparing apples to oranges. You?re comparing a 225HP - 2S vs. 150HP - 4S. If you use a carbed, 150HP - 2S for the comparison, you?re looking at a 30% increase in fuel efficiency, 40% tops.
If your currently using $1, 200 in gas. The 4S would cut your fuel bill $400 a year (1200 x .3) over a comparable 2S. Mind, you this number would actually be a lot less because you are basing your annual fuel usage off a 225HP motor.

If you save $6K going used over new, you are looking at a 15-year pay back on the 4S. Are you going to keep that boat and motor that long?

My real question is wither or not a 150hp will allow me to cruise @22-25 knots?

Where your going to suffer is in your hole shoot and your rough water performance. On the good days you'll probably be happy. On the bad days, we'll wish you had more.

On boat test, your boat with a 200 Hp 2S cruised @ 22 knots. Doubt you will do as well with 25% less HP on all but the best of days
