Re: Repowering

While I haven't updated the site (I really need something better then Word for doing a web page), work is progressing on the boat.

Question. How far into the boat does a splash well need to go to allow for the motor to lift. I'd like to take it only as par as where my top snaps down, but I think that won't be far enough.

Is there an easy way to tell?

And should this be a boat building topic?

Tacklewasher,
I couldn't see your photo's either but you can 'build' a page on the website in the link at the end of this post.

Good luck,

Peter

Re: Repowering

Cool project. I would go with fuel under the floor if you can do it. The boat will handle best with the weight low. Be careful about going too far aft as she may porpoise, even trimmed in. Uh oh, I think I hear NautiJohns footsteps . . . :D

Love the supervisors. One to the other "what the heck is he doing", the other "relax, I'm pretty sure he has a plan, let's just watch".

Re: Repowering

There isn't a lot of room under the floor for a tank. What I've decided to do is run it on a 5 gallon for this year and then decide based on how much fuel I use etc. if I should keep the main tank or not. I suspect that next winter the floor is coming out entirely and being replaced. I'd do it all now... except I'm not going to!

I got to put more pictures up there as I've got the hole mostly filled in and am working on the splashwell now.

Yup. You building and doing a lot of work. I hope the supervisors know what your doing.

Basically the splash well is made so the top of the motor clears it. So if the motor tilts into the boat 2.3 ft you need to have it 2.4 feet into boat. Remember the motor also tilts left and right be sure to leave room. If your going with a 150 I suggest a double cable no-feedback rack system for the steering.

Also the idler arm will extend passed the motor a bit also so you will need room for that too.

I highly suggest you look at a boat weith an outboard already setup and have the dealer move or help you move the motor to all positions to see what you need.

Re: Repowering

Actually, I ended up with a 115. It is a 79 or 80 (I have a thread on that as well) and uses the push/pull bar (not sure the real name, but a long stainless bar of sorts).

I think I'm going to ask the mods to move this.

Re: Repowering

Project page updated. I've asked one of the mods to move this thread. We'll see if they will or not.

I'm going to go freak someone out on my way to work.

I've found a boat like mine (except a bowrider) with a 140 hp on the back. Pretty sure the guy just bought it as it matches one that was in the paper a month or so ago.

Anyway, taking my camera and my tape measuer and going to check his dimensions. His well is different then I want but I will check how far in it goes. His 140 is the same size as my 115 so it will be a good judge (plus his motor is up).

Re: Repowering

Well (and I know I have to update the page) all the pieces have been cut and are fitted together. Going to take them all apart tomorrow and put some fiberglass resin all over them, then put them back together again and finish fiberglassing them. I know it's an aluminum boat, but I just figured the fiberglass would be better for waterproofing. Then I will add the Hippo liner (truck bed covering) to match add to the waterproofing and get the colour right.

Still have to pull the old controls, install the ones that came with the outboard and by a steering cable.

Okay. All the ends are coated in resin.

One question.

How do you get resin out of a moustache?

Re: Repowering

Update (as I don't have many pictures for the project page).

Got the resin out of my moustache. Everything is together with one small (less then 1 inch) measuring issue. If I turn the motor all the way, the steering rod hit the side of the splash well, so I had to cut a hole. But other then that, it went pretty well.

New steering, new control cables, all the wiring is done and the motro runs. Dropped it in the lake and the trim unit started leaking. Didn't leak on the driveway and worked fine but started on the lake. So it was a quick out and back with the motor fully trimmed up. The manual release screw was leaking so I'll find an o-ring, drain the fluid to be sure there's no water in in and re-fill it to try again tomorrow.

For the little it ran, the motor seemed great. Never took it off idle though.

Really need to get out fishing though.

Re: Repowering

SO, not sure if anyone is following this or not, but I've got the trim fixed. Have run it up and down in the driveway with no leaks and have all the air out of it.

Heading out of town so I won't be able to try it until the 16th.

Can't believe a retaining ring costs $8.00 though ;)
