hi guys.

I had posted a message earlier in the OMC forum that was moved to this forum and then apparently locked. I would like to appolgize to JB for posting there when I knew better, and to anyone else I may have offended.

Below is a copy of my questions.

OK. My little brother is looking to buy his first boat. He basically has it narrowed down to 2 that he likes. One is a 1987 Calais 16' with a 90hp Yamaha on it. The boat is in excellent shape (I have seen pics). It is set up for tubing and fishing (rod holders, fish finder, and ski bar, etc. are included). It is selling for $6500 OBO. The other one is also in excellent shape I am told. It has a Volvo 4 cyl. inboard (he has no idea who made the leg) and he assume's the boat must be about a 18' long. I never asked what this boat comes with, but it is newer than the first one and is selling for $12 ,500. He lives in a small town not really near any huge lakes, and the boat selection is limited. He has shopped around for a while and has narrowed it down to these 2.

So my question. Do you guys think a 1987 90hp Yamamha is a good engine? How does it compare to my 1990 90hp Evinrude given that our boats are very similar in size and shape. Or would you recomend going with an inboard? I have no experience with inboards and since I am the only person he knows that has a boat, he has come to me for advice. And since I don't know anyone else with a boat (cartoppers/canoes excluded) I always come to you guys with my questions. (Have I mentioned how much I appreciate it?)

His wife-to-be likes the more expensive one of course, but I think he will be just as happy with the smaller cheaper one.

Which one is likely to be better on gas?

Which one is Faster?

Which one should be less problematic??

Thanx for your time and for reading this.

Sprout

Re: request for everybody's opinion.

Sorry but I have to rain on your parade a bit.

Evaluating the condition of either boat based on either pictures or what you have been told is a huge risk with lots of his money on the table. The only advice that I would give him if I were you is to have both boats checked out by a marine mechanic.

I have not clue one on the boat market wherever your brother lives but $6,500.00 for a 19 year old 90hp engine of any make in any condition on a 16' boat is beyond my comprehension. Here at iboats you can get a 2005 Yammy 90 with a 2 yr mfgr. wty. for $6K:

http://www.boatmotors.com/rebuilt_outboard_motors/#90

You did not provide enough information on the 18'er to even comment.

My advice is to go to the boat trader on-line web site and check comparible rigs for prices. Do the research - - even if you have to travel a bit I think you will find far better deals that the two you have listed.

Re: request for everybody's opinion.

Thankyou for your response.

I guess I should have mentioned that the prices were in Canadian dollars........

And I guess I was just asking for opinions based on what I know about the boats.

I realize I couldn't give much info. I was just wondering what you guys thought about which motors would perform better, and were more reliable, and which burned more fuel.

I am comparing a 1990ish 4cyl volvo,
a 1987 yamaha 90hp,
and a 1990 90hp evinrude.

thanx again
