Requesting warranty extension

I bought a new Johnson 115HP 4-Stroke on 11/03 (2004 model). It was a package deal on a new boat. The boat has been back to the factory twice under warranty, easily preventing use of the boat for 6 months. I feel like I have lost critical time on my 3 year warranty and considering asking Johnson for an extension. I know it wasn't engine problems causing me to be sidelined, but figure it wouldn't hurt to ask.

I do believe there was a licensing partnership between my boat and engine companies that had the Johnson's standard on their boat. So I kinda think the boat manufacturer has a stake in this somewhat. They ignored my original request about it so I was thinking of asking Johnson directly or having my dealer ask Johnson. My dealer no longer sells either boat or engine brands so he doesn't have much leverage.

I would deal with Bomb. direct. They are the ones who will ultimately have the final say. Make sure you have the documents to prove it's been laid up.....Like you say, it never hurts to ask in a firm way...

Johnson didn't do anything wrong. Why go after them? Bombarier is merely a supplier to the manufacturer. If the boat had a problem its their responsibility to take care of the issue. As for extending your engine warranty, good luck. You'd be better off having the selling dealer offer you an extended warranty on the engine. They are available from a third party through dealers.

I doubt that the boat manuafactuer could or would try to convince Bombardier to extend the warranty on your motor. They did their part when they repaired the boat problems. True, Bombardier didn't do anything wrong. Never said they did. All I'm saying is that's where the ball will bounce in the end. The dealer might be an option if he's decent, but don't count on him to take it out of his pocket because the boat had defects that were repaired by the maker...

I still fail to see why you feel the ball ends up in Bombardiers court. If you bought a new car and parked it in your garage for the entire period of the warranty would you be justified in going back to the manufacturer saying hey, this car has only a few miles on it, give me three more years. Ain't gonna happen and it should not happen in this case. It's simply not a problem Johnson had anything to do with.

Upinsmoke,

No one is saying Bombadier has a moral obligation here, I'm just asking if there are precedents that might help me kindly request it. The motor is sort of held hostage from me while the boat is back at the depot.

A car dealer will extend the warranty on a car for all the time the car is in having warranty repairs, same for many boat dealers. The engine on my boat is equally "in the shop" timewise and I just cringe at the loss of use. The motor will not fail me sitting still, I need to be using it and benefiting from the warranty period while using the boat. I've lost 6 months of that protection of warranty because I certainly would be using the boat, not just letting it sit. Not Johnson's fault, it is my boat manufacturer's fault. My repairs are not even over - they can't even tell me when I will get the boat back! it could be far more than 6 months.

Re: Requesting warranty extension

If I bought a new car and it wound up being in the shop for the duration of the warranty, for whatever reason,, you can bet I'd be looking for compensation. Tony did not just park the boat and then ask for an extended warranty....Once again, I never said Johnson is responsible. Only that in the end, they are the only ones who can decide to extend the warranty or not on their motor, weather this be through arbitration of the Dealer, Manufacturer, Owner or whoever....

A car is not a boat. Car manufacturers are car motor manufacturers. Boat manufacturers are not boat motor manufacturers. Your only prayer is if the boat manufacturer is also owned by the motor manufacturer. Otherwise Bombardier ain't gonna give a crap about your "boat" problems any more than Goodyear is going to care about your car's suspension and alignment problems. They ain't gonna give you new tires. Bombardier is out of the loop, period! If you want compensation, address it with your boat manufacturer. Maybe they'll buy you some extended warranty.
