Reseal cabin door frame

I have small leak coming from the top of my cabin door. In the summer when it rains this causes my cuddy to get moist and steamy and prone to mold and mildew. I wanted to ask if it was ok to use self-adhesive weather stripping to place around the door instead of caulking with 3m 4200uv. The leak is from the top behind the black top cover. The caulk that is there is of different thickness and is craking. I was looking at buy the the 1" wide by 1/4" thick stripping. Please let me know.

pull the whole door assembly
service any seals by replacing them with original
re-bed the door assembly with butyl tape and UV4000

Ok. My main concern was if the sealants was still needed if i got a thick and wide enough weather strip. If using the weather strip with adhesive back where would you add the sealant? Over top of the weather strip?

depends on how the unit is bedded to the boat. my boat, everything was bedded with butyl tape and the seams caulked. it lasted 31 years prior to tear down

The weather stripping on my electronics box, gauge cover, cabin door, etc. where closed cell foam rubber with peel and stick backing.

Just squeezed the appropriate amount of 847 adhesive the peel and stick and spread it around with an acid brush.

It's OK with me . . . but . . . make sure you have determined the exact source of the leak and are addressing it appropriately. I suspect that in a heavy rain, the water ducting around the door perimeter is overflowing and the seals are not holding the water back.

Maybe you can use the garden hose and sprinkler to determine the conditions and reasons the door is leaking. . . Light rain, heavy rain, condensation, etc.

Understood. Got the frame off this morning and got a better look at it. There was no gasket/stripping on the frame just old caulk on the top and none one the other half. This should be straight forward from here. My hatch window I should follow the same process correct? I remove the screws from the hatch window but it was rather difficult prying up and out from underneath the dark boat cover. That seems to be more secured than the door frame.

Yes the leak is coming from the top of the dash which is the top back side of the frame facing the windshield. I used a garden sprayer to find these leaks.

I plan on renting a slip this year and would like to fix all the leaks that I have been putting off.

Still working on it KC. I been having issues seeing while underneath the boat cover and trying to hold the flashlight. Then the flashlight is so bright under the cover that is blinds be at certain angles. I will get one of those headband flashlights. I think i will put it off until late March or first week in April if it is not snowing.

Got it home clean and scraped it with degreaser. Waiting on my adhesive tape and 4200 to be delivered today. In the mean time I will see if I can figure out how I need to install some lighting under the boat cover so i can clean and prepare the door way for install. I will add the tape in a L pattern along the frame.

be careful of butyl it wants to melt in sun, i have seen older boats with butyl dripping because of they were parked, id only use urethane caulk if it was me as that's what they use for windows on cars now aday's as well .

I thought butyl was also used for windows or just a sealant. Here is the version that I purchased. Mines wont be in direct sunlight if that makes a difference hehe
