ok so i fixed my powerhead{in reguards to the dry cyl. post}(problem was a improperly wired ignition) anyway so today i took my lower unit off and got as far as all the impeller housing off to change that as well, but my main bearings spool(the plate behind the anode) is stuck in there to the point i tried two pieces of angle iron and screws to get it out and it bent the angle iron, anyone have any suggestions as to how to get it out? im not being dumb and they built it into the casing or anything right?can i just put an o ring on the prop drive shaft? do i really need that special tool in the manual or is there a way around it?(Frank i need ur help)

No other way to describe it! That damn thing frequently gets stuck and it can be a bear to get out. See: There are two O rings sealing it to the gearcase and the lubricant gets hard. Then if that isn't bad enough, the aluminum corrodes, jamming it tighter.

Chrysler had a warning to remove the spool yearly (with salt water use) to prevent a corroding spool from splitting the gearcase. That's how tight it can get.

You need to TRY a couple of lengths of 1/4 inch all thread with a tool you will make. Cut a chunk of steel at least 1/2 inch thick and about 2 X 4 inches. Drill a center hole to clear the threads on the prop shaft but ride on the splined land, about 9/16 plus a smidge larger. Drill two more 5/16 holes to match the distance of the anode screw holes. You will find it necessary to drill the holes in the spool through, and tap them all the way otherwise for sure you will strip them. Then put a couple of nuts and washers on the plate and tighten. What? It still didn't come out? No surprise!

Try some heat while tightening the nuts. When you strip the anode holes, re-tap to 5/16 and use that size all thread. Spray the Pee Eye double Ess out of it with penetrant. be sure to speray in the water intake slots to get the inner O ring and spool flange. Alternate heat and penetrant. One took me a couple of days spread out over a couple of weeks. Not a pleasant job, but eventually you will prevail! And no! You can not just slip an O ring over the prop shaft. Shame on you! You KNOW nothing in life is easy and everything fights you.

will i need to replace the spool? i just ordered my seal kit but did not order a new spool, as much trouble as this is i think this part is going to a mechanic, atleast if he messes it up he is liable i would almost surely foul this up.

You will not need to replace the spool because the O rings do the actual sealing. You MAY need to hone the inside of the gearcase to ensure a good sealing surface for the O rings though.

The only critical O ring and surface is the inner, smaller one. That seals water out and oil in the gearcase. The larger outer O ring just seals the water intake passage from the prop and a little leaking here can be tolerated.

Ahhh--- Forgot to ask---You do realize that the four 5/16 bolts with 1/2 heads must be removed to pull the spool, don't you? These bolts have small O rings under the washers and seal the gearcase from leaking oil. So when you remove them be sure that the gearcase is drained.
