I recently bought a center console bay boat that had wall to wall carpeting in it. The carpet was in real bad shape so I pulled it all out and brushed the fiber glass with a stiff wire brush. The end result was nice and all the carpet came out. After the carpet was up I was left with rough looking fiberglass on the side walls of the boat. The side walls had visible woven roving glass. Some areas looked dry as if they need some resin to seal it all up. I want to make the side walls smooth and take out that woven roving look. I plan on using some fiberglass mat in some areas to smooth it out and fill in some spots.

Should I add some fiberglass mat down the entire side wall to smooth out that woven roving glass look or can I just put some type of resin on in layers to smooth it out? I know I will have to sand it smooth no matter what I do. I just was to do it right since Im there.
Also can anyone recommend a type of resin that is better than the other?

Thanks
