Resistor wire shortened.

The resistor wire that runs to the coil on my engine has been cut. It does not have a terminal end on it anymore and looks (just guessing) to be about 6-8 inches shorter than it was when it had the factory end on it. Will this affect the proper resistance reading? The old ignition is gone. Installing new Marine Mallory electronic ignition and non resistant coil. Thanks again for all the help folks. Ed

I'm not sure if you're asking a question.


If you're replacing the ignition. The new Mallory system won't use that resistor wire at all unless they specify that you need to keep it. Or, they may indicate that you need to add a "Ballast" resistor.

If you'tr not using it you should probably completely remove any "resistor" wire to the coil and replace it with regular wire.

Yes. You will need to replace the resistor wire with the proper resistor wire OR add an external resistor, or just buy a coil with internal resistor..

If you don't use a resistor your points and coil will fry.

I'm thinking that if it is only 6" or so that is missing you might be ok (dependign on how long the resistor wire was to begine with. - the longer the better for you). What you could do is to set up your new system, start the engine (so you have the proper load on the wire), and take a voltage reading at the coil. If you are reading about 9 volts I think you should be fine. The purpose of the resistor wire is to drop the voltage to the coil from 12+V (maybe as high as 13 - 14 V with the alternator puttting out) down to about 9V. Or, as has been said, you can just pull the resistor wire & replace it & add the ballast resistor.
