1989 4.3L Cobra. Rochester 2V carb.

I found this pin (approx 1/2" long) when I changed my oil & filter. It was resting ON TOP of the newspaper I put in the bilge under the filter and didn't have any oil on it. So it must have fallen from the engine at that time and didn't come out of the oil pan. I tried to see where it might have come from and even scanned through the OMC Parts Catalogue, but no luck. Anyone have any idea?

Second question: While looking for a 'home' for the pin, I noticed that the choke tube assy pictured below (I think that's what it's called based on the parts catalogue) has two holes. One has a tube going into it, the other is just a hole. Is this correct? Being ig'nant about such things I thought maybe the pin was supposed to block the second hole, but the head is too small & it would fall into the hole rather than resting on top.

I've been impressed with the expertise on this board, but if anyone can identify where that pin is supposed to go, I'll go from impressed to amazed.

Does it have a hole in it, like for a cotter pin? I know nothing about omc, just curious......

Some sort of linkage pin? A good luck charm? Don't throw it away!

I would take a good hard look at : throttle and shifting linkage, steering rack and linkage. Make sure all pins are in the above......don't want to turn the steering and have nothing happen.

The second pic.... that hole should be there.

The first pic? Ya got me. My guess is that whatever it is from, it was dropped previously and you knocked it from it's hiding spot in changing the oil. Does look like a linkage pin though.

Its a clevis pin. Like was said before. Check all linkages because thats normally where they are installed.

No hole in it, just a solid pin (unless it possibly sheared off, but the end looks pretty clean, not like it broke). I'll check again, focusing on linkages.

Thanks KaGee, just wanted to make sure on that hole.

It looks kinda flared on the small end, maybe a rivit? Is the head painted gray?(motor color) If not check the altenator or maybe a serial tag. A clevis would have some kinda way of holding it in place, e-clip grove or cotter pin hole, etc.

The hole on the choke tube is intake for fresh air to the choke. Check your parts catalog and see if there shouldn't be a second tube inserted there. In other applications I've seen theres a tube attached between the hole and the carb to draw clean air. As it is the hole could plug with debris and prevent the choke from warming up.

olbuddyjack- no, head wasn't painted. And unless it sheared off, no apparent way of holding it in place...

As far as the carb hole, checked the parts catalogue and no other tube attached that I can see. If I thought there was danger of it clogging, I might put in a short 90 degree tube to prevent it, but engine is very clean, see little risk on that front.

If it doesnt have a hole or a groove for a snap ring Im going with the rivot theory. Just save it and if something goes you will deffinately know then Until then........have fun

LOL, was just thinking yesterday that I was a bit disappointed that nobody had thought to mention that as a possibility.

But I checked the filter wrenches (had to use 2) when I found the pin, and that wasn't it.

Still, glad to see that you forum members are on the ball & didn't let a creative possibility with a good probablility of explaining it slip through the cracks! Kudos to Robby, even though that wasn't it.

Trying to think of any other tools I might have used around the engine to check, but nothing comes to mind...

After reading the above posts, I bet the previous owner (or marina tech) has an oil filter wrench missing a rivet.

Re: Resolved!: A challenge: can anyone identify this part?

it does look like an oil filter wrench rivet. however anymore nothing in a bilge suprises me. I have found tools, rings, wristwatches, condoms(both new and used) eels ,crabs, both live and dead, but you never live until you stick your hand below an engine and grab a 2 ft long eel or get bit by a crab. I try not to go bilge diving anymore. if it comes in with a nasty bilge a dock hand gets to clean it before I work on it :) :)
