I just picked up a 87 Four Winns 210 Horizon 5.7L Merc.Alpha 1 out drive.
What would you recommend before trying to fire it up? I read through the stickys but didn't see something that covers starting a motor up that has been winterized for 8 years. Thanks for any input:D

1) Pull plugs and squirt oil or ATF in each cylinder and let soak for a day.
2) Pull distributor and use special tool to drive oil pump with a drill to get oil flowing throughout the engine.
4) Connect up a portable tank instead of running on the 8 year old gasoline.

It would probably be a good idea to change the impeller. If you don't, watch the temp gauge and keep a hand on the manifolds to make sure they aren't overheating.

Thank you Bruce!

The boat may be an '87, but that K series engine is around '96.

After the oil has set per Bruce, turn it over a few times by hand. Certain cylinder valve springs have been compressed for 8 years. After spinning the oil pump, would use starter with plugs removed to spin up, to try to get some oil in the lifters. (cover carpet from oil coming out plug holes)

Rust on any plugs means water leaked in. Valves maybe rusted, and further tear=down may be needed.

If gas was left in carb, that will probably need a good teardown and cleaning, but could wait until start-up.

Normal tune-up stuff, plugs, rotor, distributer cap. Oil and filter, water sep filter. Drive oil change.

Careful inspection of bellows before splashing the boat for first time and do recommend changing impeller. I would do via drive removal, and also check the engine alignment, and easier to see if there was any water in the u-joint bellows, that might have rusted things significantly over 8 years.

PS: Noticed that there was no risers between exhaust manifold and elbow. I would have thought that a deeper hull like this would have them.

Agree ^^^^ would be good to pull the drive. Before starting check the drive oil level.

Is there a way to cross referance the serial # to find out what the motor really is? I was told it had a new motor installed @ 500 hours and now it has 620...I should get the correct manual for the motor and drive before getting into the motor.

If you order manuals from Merc, it is by serial number. Seperate engine and drive manuals.

It should be #17 for your engine. You have sepentine belt and standard heads. Probably a '96 or '97, but Merc can provide the month of manufacture from serial number. An LX would be a 4brl weber and T5 ignition. 250HP @ prop
