restarting '85 Evinrude 90 hp v-4 sat up 5 yrs

Anyone care to offer advice? I know to disconnect the oil injection and use premix from now on (insufficient mix was the original problem apparently), also know to drain the fluids and replace, will remove the tank and clean. Also plan to replace all hoses, fuel lines, filters. Got new plugs (champion)and sprayed the cylinders with wd-40. Will do a compression check this evening.<br />Having chatted with my local boat wrench, he suggested a new h20 impeller kit at about 115.00. Also suggested that the carbs may need tearing down and cleaning at about 200.00. Didn't say rebuilt, just cleaned. <br />I realize the new impeller is a good idea, and the carbs may/may not be ok with spray in type cleaner. Was wondering how you feel about the cost of these jobs, and if i should tackle them myself or not. Am pretty handy with my hands and a wrench. Grew up working on 4wd drivetrains, engines, volkswagons, harleys, etc. Just not boats. Should i try this myself to save some cash or take it to the guy that knows his s**t. What about the cost? seem in line for the SE USA?<br />Anything else i should consider replacing prior to putting this puppy back in the water? Like trim/tilt, steering, wiring checks etc. All help greatly appreciated. Have learned alot from this board already........Thanks in advance.

Jamar,<br /><br />You've got all the right ideas.<br /><br />Buy a manual $25.00.<br /><br />Rebuild the carbs. yourself-$50.00.<br /><br />Replace the impeller yourself-$50.00-$75.00, for the kit.

I would install a new H2O impeller myself ($30), I don't see the need for an entire pump assembly at $115, you'll see the pump is fine when putting in the new vanes (the old ones have taken a permanent set and become brittle by now). Was the engine stored with fuel in the carb? If yes, I'd have the carbs cleaned, remove all varnish and clean jets make sure they are free of obstructions. $200 seems a little steep for a carb cleaning as well. New plugs and go fishing.

Insufficient mix was the problem? You did not mention what the problem is, other than sitting. Has this problem, whatever it might be, been rectified?<br />What is the general condition of the engine? Is it clean, or corroded with salt, etc.?<br /><br />Carbs and a new water pump impeller are not particularly difficult, assuming you have a manual and follow it, and the engine is in generally ok shape re corrosion.<br /><br />John

Insufficient mix was the problem, engine would bog down (slow mode) shortly after planing off. Has been rectified apparently by using premix and disconnecting VRO, so far so good but havent run it much really since then. Main problem is sitting up, due to new house, marraige, kids, etc. Have yet to get out and open it up hard until i get everything checked out. So i am assuming that the oil mixing problem has been rectified since i am now running 50:1 premix/no vro.

Engine is very glean, in good shape otherwise, with relatively few hrs on it. Has never seen salt water.

I took a 1991 Johnson 90 out of two year storage. Previous owner had done nothing to prepare it for storage. I had to rebuild the carbs, put in new impeller, replace sticky thermostats, rerouted pee line to top of block. Ran great after that. VRO never did work well, even after cleaning oil tank and lines. Made the decision to disconnect and run premix with a standard OMC fuel pump.

Jamar<br />djohns is right get the manual it isn't hard at all. You will definately need a good takedown and cleaning of the carbs the jets will still gum up and that causes the bogging down when powering up spray cleaner will not do a good job at all I tried. Last week I went though the same problem with my 81 90hp and the kits were $35.00 for both with a gasket for the air breather at $15.00. Happy Boating and good luck.

Thanks for all the advice and support guys. Have manual ordered.....will try it myself. Dhadley if you are listening i sure was hoping for your two cents on this one. From what i have read you are the OMC guru, and offer great str8 forward advice.

Jamar,<br />I have an 85 Evinrude v4 120. Did the water pump kit when I picked it up in April. Long story, but will warn you not to turn the shift rod when you drop the lower end. Not a bad job to do though. Just get a helper to put it back together. This time of year though, if it runs ok on the muffs, why not give it a shot on the water and do the carb work ect. over the winter. I had to promise the girlfriend I wouldn't take nothing else apart that ain't broke. Till summer's over.
