Hi all, i got an 89 johnson gt150. only ran the boat& motor 3 times to date.
new vro, carb rebuild, new ngk plugs (think they are br7hs-10's), new fuel & oil filters, fresh gas, no water visible in float bowl drainage. 95psi & above on each cylinder. replaced EVERY Kwik clamp, no fuel or oil leaks. gas tanks anti syphon working properly.
Shes takes abit from a cold start to start. new 1000 cranking amp battery, she turns over plenty fast.
i prime the bulb till rock hard, 3/4 throttle idler advance, hold the key in for primer and in 3 or so seconds of motor turn she'll pop. But then it will fire one pop die, fira a pop & die, pop die , pop die, etc, atleast 12-15 times. over and over till finally i get a 2 second rev. then shell start and stay running.
i can then go for a 45 min ride, stop, and i can immediately restart the motor with a half of a starter turn, bam, fires right up. if i sit for 20 min then try to restart it takes a 4-5 tries, same 3/4 fast idle, give a 1/4 squezze to reprime the fuel bulb, key pushed in to prime. takes 15-20 seconds to start.
Now after that 45 min ride, if sit for 1hr, it will take almost 60 seconds to restart, same thing as if from a cold start. even thou the motor is still nice & warm, pop die, pop die, pop die, 1 seocnd of fireing, 2 seconds of firing.
why the pop die, pop die, every pop i have to wait for the starter to wind down again and attempt to restart.
Any thoughts or personal experience's ?
Also, on the primer solenoid, where should the red valve be pointing towards? is this some type of restriction valve for the primer? i pulled the top carb primer feed, turned it over with primer activated and gas is flowing from the primer line. But is there such thing as too much primer feed? my red valve is turned all the way clockwise, pointing at about 8 o'clock. turning the valve counter clockwise restrict primer flow? couldnt find the adjustment in service manual.
thanks all and be safe.
