Restoration boo boo

The drain for my bilge is right under the front of the engine. When rebuilding the stringers I spilled some epoxy which found the low spot and filled the threads. Should be easy to clean out . . . well until I installed the engine

I would think that you can just use a tap and cut the threads again and remove the epoxy.

If I could find a 1" pip[e thread tap I would do that-so far no luck. Looks like a wire brush, a small chisel and some elbow grease might be my best bet. If it wasn't against glass, a torch would work, but I'll save that option for when I totally give up on the project!

I don't know if it would work or not, but since your just cutting epoxy could you make your own tap out of a piece 1" pipe. Cut four notches out of the threads. It might create enough of a cutting edge to remove the epoxy.

That's a great idea! You don't need a hardened steel pipe tap to cut threads in the epoxy.

Make certain of the thread series, though. Are you sure that it is a 1"-11-1/2 NPT thread? That's a good size hole....
How did you measure?
3/4-14NPT is almost identical thread to 1"-14 UNS.
You will need to drill a through hole first.
How are you able to access the hole?

Tap drill for 1" NPT is 1-5/32". the 3/4 NPT is 59/64" , the 1" UNS is 15/16"

Just FYI if it is a standard screw in plug the diameter is 3/4" pipe thread.....

It is 3/4- you are correct. It looks bigger. I was going to notch my spare plug, but they are expensive

I have some scrap 3/4 pipe with good threads so making my own thread cleaning tap should be easy enough.
