Hey guys, I'm new to the forum...
I just recently got my grandfather's '66 super skeeter. He bought it new back in the day & took good care of it until about the mid-90's. That's when my dad got a hold of it & it's basically sat in the woods for 10 years.
I pulled it out & I'm determined to get it back in running order.

I'd like suggestions on what I need to do to get this back to as new as possible please...I've never restored a boat before so any help would be welcome.

To the boat itself, I gave it a pressure wash & cloroxed the interior. It seems to be in pretty good shape although the woode around the seats seems to be starting the rot.

The engine is a mercury 9.8 outboard (also '66 model). It's in a bit worse shape. I don't think it's had anything done to it since '66!
So far I've:
-Taken it apart & degreased the whole thing
-Sanded down the prop and engline keel & repainted the prop (too poor to buy a new one)
-took apart the carborator and replaced the gas tank - it had a metal one and the carb was full of rust particles.
-I've taken the pull-cord to a local lawn mower shop to get the spring replaced & the pull-cord rewond & replaced.
Other than that I really need suggestions on what to do to this thing. I don't know what needs doing or how to do it. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

1. Replace the water pump.

2. Service the lower unit, with new oil. Replace the fill/drain plug seals.

The boat may be a completely different story.

Let us know.

Re: restoration help

Hiya Rustvyper,

I rescued my grandfather's old boat from my father who let it sit with NO tlc for 18 years. (Yep 18, I even double checked the math.) So like yourself I forged ahead with no experience but much determination. Restoring the boat has been a great project/learning experience. And as you already know, is made even cooler knowing I'm fixing up something that my grandfather enjoyed so much.
The guys here on iboats have been my most valuable resource. There is a ton of knowledge here as well as lots of inspiration from some really nicely done project boats. Crab Bait is right about the search feature. It is your friend.
Cheers to you for your determination! I dont know as much as the other guys on here, but whatever advice I have I'll post.
