Well Good People,

I have taken on the challenge of doing a total restoration of a 1980 Bomber Commander. I am really new to the site, but I have read entire threads of several other restoration projects. All of you have given me the courage to begin what I thoght to be a ridiculously impossible task. I also think that I enjoy working on boats more riding in them. Therapy I suppose.

I chose this project because I liked the lines of the boat and I prefer I/O. I have seen other Bombers that really turn heads as they pass, but for now ADABO is not one of those. I know that I will have to remove the top cap to replace the deck and transom. There is no motor or upholstery. The keel has been scarred and the repair is butt ugly. Other than that the boat is perfect!!!!

The plan is divided into three phases:
Remove the top cap
Replace the transom
Inspect / replace stringers
Replace the decking
Repair hull and cap as neccessary

Prepare Mercruiser140 for installation
Prepare for installation of new electronics
Inspect / Repair all systems

Prepare boat for refinishing (paint probably because I want to change color scheme)
Install interior
Splash finished boat

I have decided to use epoxy resins, but unsure about the cloth mat to use. I have zero experience in fiberglassing, but I will have a graious plenty soon. The weather is beginning to change here so I will have to plan to take this indoors at some point after the majority of the grinding is done. Although this is not the first project of mine it is certainly the most ambitious. I know that I will have several questions in the near future, so I will start by thanking you now.

Pictures will be posted after I find the majic button. Thanks Good People,

The boat initially had a Mercruiser 470 in it, but it was not part of the sale. I have a running Mercruiser 140 (2 in fact) and outdrive that will power her when the time comes. The trailer will also get a makeover, but for now the bunk system has been redone to properly support the boat. My focus is on transom and deck replacement. And now for the rest of the story...

Re: Restoration of ADABO the1980 Bomber Commander

I am sure that I have drilled out 200 rivets to remove the top cap, and I am only half way around the boat. Have I lost my mind thinking that this was going to be easy? I need to know if it will be okay to fill the holes where the top cap mates to the hull. It appears the cap has been removed before this project because, there are empty holes without rivets!!!! What is the correct spacing between the rivets? I know that I am beating the truth to an early grave, but seriously there is an empty hole in the hull for every one that I remove. To borrow a phase from woodonglass "I'm just saying". Can someone out there tell me the factory spacing between rivets or give me an idea of what they should be?

Also can you or should you use "pop rivets" to replace / attach the top cap to the hull?

I apologize for the lack of pictures today, but today just wasn't good.

Thankyou Good People

Finally got the rivets drilled out and almost ready to lift the topcap. I am thinking about building a wooden A frame to lift it. Any other suggestions?

I guess you just do whatever it takes. We haven't seen your shop so its hard to say.:)

Nice looking boat. I'll be watching.

BTW, its not harder than you thought, just takes more time and money than you thought.
