Not a full restoration thread...but wanted to post this anyway. I just completed a restoration of the bar/cabinet on the rear of the engine dog house on my 1980 Coronado......been taking some heat in another thread for not using marine grade. We'll see how it lasts. It's just a birch veneer ply from Menards...stained and finished with Spar Urethane...didn't take all that long to complete, but I think it looks much better than it did.

Slap some Epiphanes Marine Varnish on it and it should last a while. You're gunna need some UV protection and that will give it to you.

The spar urethane will provide UV protection....the boat sits on a covered lift in the summer...and is covered in a heated barn in the winter....so it doesn't get alot of abuse.

I made a dresser with some spalted birch..really loved the looks :) .

Nice job on your cabinet .. keep us posted on the longevity of the birch.

Although I think it will be fine if its all sealed up with thane..

Thanks....I'm more concerned what the engine heat will do to it than the weather. That area gets warm. We'll see how it holds up. Thought about using some UHMW but wanted to keep the original look.

Very nice addition to your boat, coronado! Good work.

I will be willing to bet you get good life and service from your project.....with proper maintenance. I've seen many veneers used here, including birch, in the FL sun and salt with nice results.

Good Luck!

Well....we promised to go see our nephew when he left almost 4 years ago to go to the AF. Since he gets out of the AF in June...we figured we better get out there. The kids have been to Florida a bunch...but never out west....so diving will have to wait til next year!

I've done two.

A all mognany replica of the factory upholstered plywood for our Arabian and a teak door and top out of teak for our Coronado.

Very nice! Thought about teak...didnt really investigate it to much.....where do you get teak lumber? Do you have to special order it? Might want to make a new swim platform.

My local hardwood supply house carries a nice selection of teak. They has 1"x1" teak on sale and I made a new swim platform for the Arabian. The stock one from Century was walnut and was slippery.
Here is the one I made and the factory one on the 73 Coronado:

Very nice Tahorover. Thanks for posting that....I may have to check into the Teak. I cleaned and oiled the platform on my Coronado, and it looks much better.....but the wood is deteriorating and will need replaced eventually. Can't be hard to make one.

Something I notice in the picture or your Coronado caught my attention. It has no plug in the rear. Mine doesn't either. Don't you think that's odd? I've never seen or noticed any other boats without a drain plug in the stern. Yours must be like mine, having a brass plate with a pipe plug located under the in-floor cooler between the front seats. As an Engineer, I find that a very odd design concept. Any idea why they did it that way? I've seen other Coronados with a plug in the rear...so they aren't all in the front like mine and apparently yours.

I think the drain plug location has to do with center of gravity. Look at the hull on the 73 Coronado and the drain plug is at the hulls lowest location. Our 63 Coronado has it's plug in the same spot. My Arabians plug is just in front of the engine, about C.O.G. with a full tank of fuel.

Re: Restoration of Bar/Cabinet on Century Coronado

Makes sense...kind of.....When on the trailer, water collects in the area just behind the engine.....so if the plug were in the rear of the boat, you could easily drain it. The way mine is setup, you have to unscrew the plug from inside the boat, after removing the teak cover in the floor and the cooler insert. I never get very much water in there, just what comes in the boat from skiing etc.....but it's a pain in butt to get out....it's never enough for a bilge pump to get it out...usually end up using a wet dry vac to suck it out. My boat sits on a covered lift all summer and the bow is higher than the stern. Have thought about drilling the boat for a plug in the stern, but not sure I want to do that.

I have the same problem when docked on my Hydro hoist. The second I drop her off the hoist she is pumping.

where do you get teak lumber?

In Indianapolis, you can get Teak (and others) here;

http://www.northwestlumberco.com/products.htm

I replaced the steps on my boarding ladder with teak. It's pricey, but well worth it. Got all my Mahogany from there as well. It would be kind of a drive for you and I would think there might be something closer. Call around.

Thanks for the link....the platform rebuild will likely be a winter of 2011 project....unless I get motivated this summer. That's not likely with my sons baseball and basketball schedules...at least I'm not coaching anymore:D
