I thought I would finally get my project pics together and get them up on the net. Unfortunately, she still isn't finished yet, but some paint, sanding, polishing, and reassembly should fix that. Pics can be viewed in my gallery here: Gallery There are 3 pages, just use the nav buttons at the top.

But here is one from this morning. There's still much to do, but it is on hold for a couple weeks while I recover from back surgery. I will do the red when I recover. The boat is a 1976 Glastron T-166. The motor under the tarp is a '76 Johnson 85hp V4. If you're gonna' take one apart, take it all apart right?

back surgery <ouch> its been 2yrs since my cervical spine surgery <metal plate,4 screws, cadevors bone plug>
the pain for me to this day is unbearable. but i was almost paralized. so it was a trade off. its looking like more surgery for me. i have to stand and move around while on the comp.
take your time, they did this new proceedure on me to get me in and out. wish i would have had the old 4 to 6 wks in hosp bed.<make sure to get good meds>
- anyway boat looks good. it looks like a trihull also.
it is refreshing to see all these boats being brought back.

Re: Restoration Pics

2K, it is a tri-hull. It was our first boat after my wife and I got married. I also have a thing for 1976 Glastrons since I own 2 of them. The other is a 19' bowrider powered by a 302 Ford. I did the mechanical;s of it last year.

Hopefully my surgery is going to be as simple as it sounds. I ruptured L5-S1 back in Feb. and havn't been able to do much since. I go in tonight, hopefully to be out friday...

Re: Restoration Pics

The 166 is a nice boat. I can now tell you almost anything you want to know about one at this point, LOL. My '76 was the first year of the 166. Glastron built a great boat. I love fly fishing for bass off the bow of mine. It is nice and stable. I've even managed to pull a slalom skier around with 3 adults on board with this boat and its 85hp stump puller.

Re: Restoration Pics

yea ill probably trade my 31x10.5 tires off my bronco to get the boat back. i have the original set in the shed, they rode better anyway.-
-
my surgery was c6-c7, ihave t5=6/t7=8 that need work it sux. i was law enforcement guarding a prisoner that just had brain surgery, he just came out of surgery - popped up and almost hit the nurse, i stopped that but got hurt in process of restraining him - then he fell out. fluck thing, doc said he shouldve never gottten up.
anyway good luck.
-
the T166 is all complete except tank <he pulled that out>. im going to assume the snorkle was to vent tank area of fumes. it even has a lorance under dash fishfinder.
it has a white snorkle, blue/white hull, white interior. so it mite be the 78 year.
i have it on video from when i 1st got it, and took pics of it last week.
-
again i wish you all the best with your surgery.
2k boat

Re: Restoration Pics

Surgery is done and I am back home. The damage was worse than the surgeon expected, but he believes all will be good. The pain is managable and decreasing slowly. Hopefully I can get back tho the boat in a few weeks. I'm really looking forward to getting her wet again.

Re: Restoration Pics

hey Jason,

I am in the "almost ready for paint stage"

just wondering what type of paint you used. . I purchased some paint called Armorpoxy and am about to spray on my first coat this weekend If I get some good weather. . I have sanded with 120 just to knock it down. . the manuf. says this stuff will act as a self primer and 2 coats should be more than enough. . we shall soon see.

Re: Restoration Pics

Much to the shagrin of some, I am using good old Rust-oleum. 3 light coats of primer and 6 light coats of paint. I am well pleased with the results so far.

I have heard of teh ArmorPoxy, but never ran across any.

Re: Restoration Pics

I actually ran into someone that painted a saltwater boat this way a couple years ago. (I won't reveal the name, I was sworn to secrecy :)) My methodology is to sand the entire boat with 220, wash with water, wash with acetone, shoot 3 coats of primer, wet sand with 440(I think), wash, acetone, then shoot 6 soats of color.

The primer is the Rustoleum clean metal primer. accouding to r-oleum, they are releasing a marine primer for this purpose. I thinned both primer and paint by 10% with mineral spirits then shot with an air sprayer. My particular gun needed about 60psi to get the pattern I wanted.

One hint, Ace Hardware will custom mix rustoleum colors.

While the paint does not have an automotive smooth finish, it would be fine as is. Also, remember that I was painting outside and was in a hurry due to upcoming surgery. The finish is still good as is, but I will probably use some buffing or polishing compound to make it shine. Wish I knew of a compatible clear to protect it a little more.

Make sure you filter the paint, I had a couple lumps.

My source tells me that their boat is still looking pretty good after 3-4 years. I figure this will serve me well as this boat may only see the water 12-15 times a year and never for more that 8 hours at a time. Otherwise it sits on the trailer under a cover.

One more + for the rust-o, it makes painting the trailer a breeze as you just keep going, LOL.

Re: Restoration Pics

that sounds great but doesnt the boat have metal flakes in the red part? i found a post last month that said how to restore the worn out color with the flakes. which is what i would like to do.
cant remember what section it was in or who entered it.
some basic pics should be ready for posting tomorrow.
-
so how can i post directly like jasonj and others?

Re: Restoration Pics

No flakes. Flakes don't appear to have been introduced on this model until '77. To post the pics, you need to get somewhere to upload them and then you can link them. Your ISP probably gives you a little space. Check here for a cool free prog that will get pictures down to posting size (less than 400 is good on this prog)http://www.imageresizer.com/.

If you can't find a spot for the pics, let me know.
