Re: Restore 1988 Bayliner Capri SKI

I could be wrong here and maybe one of the more knowledgeable peeps can answer, but if we are laying down 1.5oz CSm then 1708 which has 8oz CSM, then why not just use 1.5oz CSM then 1700 biax and keep alternating?

OOPS!, Arch, Yact........... anyone have any thoughts on this?

yep....you can......

i dont like the csm under the 1708 ...imho it is not thick enough, nor is it a floating product...its stitched, not allowing the csm to actually get close enough to the substraight...

this is just my opinion about the csm on the 1708...that is why i add the csm between each layer.

I also think you made the correct decision when you decided to get rid of all the old wood. You have some grinding ahead and a lot of work to do but when your finished it will be done right.
I will be watching (and learning)!

Re: Restore 1988 Bayliner Capri SKI

i had tried both on the stringers on mine just out of curiosity and because i got some free from a friend, a small amount mind you, and it seemed like the 1.5 csm then 1700 was alot easier to lay down and do multiple layers with.. again, it was a small area.

if you are worried about he strenght it would not be that much of a cost to add another layer then and be sure as well.

Re: Restore 1988 Bayliner Capri SKI

I never used either of them so would not see any difference, but I do want to do it right...I follow frisco on his work he had done and he used the csm with 1708 and just to keep it simple I would like to use the same. how many yards do you guys think I will need to order for 19ft boat and also how many gall of resin...I will reasearch the suggestions and give some calls as well.

Re: Restore 1988 Bayliner Capri SKI

25 yds of 1.5 oz of CSM
15 yds of 1708
15 gals of Resin (if you're careful and have minimal waste, if not you'll need 20 gals)
5 qts of cabosil
1lb of 1/4" Chopped Milled Fibers
Glass Roller

WOG, I will call uscomposits tomorrow and order that. Just to clarify on the resin do I get the
435 Standard Polyester Resin..........11.00/Quart........29.50/Gallon..........121.00/5gallon
or some other kind? And is the width 38" or 50" that you are thinking of. Tx

Re: Restore 1988 Bayliner Capri SKI

Called around local fiberglass shops and now I am all confused:) Place here in Grand Rapids that fixes boats and sell the materials which btw are a lot more expensive than what WOG suggested said they only use 2 layers of 1.5 oz csm for stringers and don't use anything else. From every post I read in the last two wks everyone is talking about 1708 and this guy never heard of it...whats going on....anyone ?

Re: Restore 1988 Bayliner Capri SKI

if they have not heard of 1708.....it is a shop that has been around for a few years and are doing things the old school ways.

in the 60's they just used a little glass to water proof the stringers.
newer ways, newer materials are better.

they are also saving money on the re build for the shop.

it will work with 2 layers of csm....however as home builders, we are not bound by the cost/time profit limits.
so we use the things that will last MUCH longer

But the savings are not that big considering how much you spend over all. I got quoted today $8.25 from uscompasit for a yard so that is $130 savings which is maybe 15% but you are making a much stronger boat. I have gotten a quote from uscompasits today for what WOG suggested.
1.5oz csm 50"x25yrds
1708 50"x15yrds
10 gallons of 435 standard polyester resin with hardener
5 quarts of cabosil it think this was like $145
1 lb of chopped milled fibers
Total with shipping from Florida to Michigan $635
The only thing left is maybe another 5 gallons of resin and plywood, with pink foam from HD I think I can get it done under $1000 with which I would be happy with

Re: Restore 1988 Bayliner Capri SKI

Looked at the gas tank today,,its the original one. Anyone got any ideas how to check if it is ok or leaking. when I took it out it was half full did not leak anywhere but I just want to make sure. Also there were two boards under the gas tank they were 1x4s they were glassed in into the hull but were all rotten. I took them out and want to replace them as well. I am thinking to cut it to the size and just go over with two layers of csm. I am planning to either gelcoat it before I put the tank back in there or use some type of paint just as an additional precaution.

the building/repair company you suggested is doing them dirty, cheap and fast....
this also includes thier labour to glass the larger 1708.
in the end, the boat owner wont know if their is csm or 1708 or even fleece ! they just care about the bottom line and turn around time,

eavdic10....

oops and WOG have you covered for what you need to do. take her down and build her up

that is expensive for resin. http://www.fiberglassservices.com/ try these guys, 5 gals cost 125.00 shipped and thatinclude the hazmat fee. the cloth will vary just about everywhere you could try these guys as well for the cloth http://www.raka.com/specials.html the warehouse deals are usually really good. they had some 1708 before but it's gone now. They do have the 1700 biax for 4.00 a/yd min order of 20yds about 80.00.
