The rain went away for almost 2 hours last night and I went to work. A patch about 6 ft long to the water line all striped and splash well reinstalled. At this rate it will be a month of Sundays before I will be fishing from her. That is it!!! her new name ?MONTH OF SUNDAYS ? What do you think?

What should I use to clean the alum before applying Gluvit to the rivets and seams?

haven't done this yet so others will have better info than i. but i',m planning on using a wire brush in the angle grinder when i do mine. it's critical to get thngs clean right around rivets for glutvit type stuff to adhere where you need it, and i think a wire brush may be the only thing that will get close enough.

Ok the rain held off this weekend but someone turned up the heat 90 plus all 3 days with the humidity hovering around 70 % but I must make hay when the sun shines. So broke out the angle grinder and started to clean the floor vacuumed up the mess and a little simple green and some 409 spray cleaner and back to bright and ready for gluvit. But how to clean the insides of the floor struts? Think now Bruce. Ok fill the boat with water, a rubber hose and air should work. Feed the tube down inside of the strut and give it a good blast of air. Never thought the crap would stop coming out. One of the supports was filled with black ants. She has been sitting for a long time outside with the old wooden deck just rotting away. When she is finished there will be no food for the ants.

Now let the insides dry and start to strip. Got one side finished and started to sand off the paint that the stripper will not tuch.
Did get a good coat of self etching primer on the transom . Man time fly?s when you are having fun and it?s 112 out side. LOL
COLD BEER COLD BEER AND MORE COLD BEER. Helps just a little. :D

nuttin beats sitting in a naked tin boat on a hot day......unless it's being burned at the stake.

your progress is lookin good there. i just confronted the same thing on the crud inside the ribs....had just cleaned out bottom, then remembered those. i used a hose and thought stuff would never stop coming out. now i have a layer of dirt 1" deep on bottom, but cleaning that will have to wait til i can raise the bow really high.

Help !!!!!! So the floor came in 3 ? weeks before it was due in. So what to do? Can any one out there in Starcraft land see a problem with installing the foam and then floor before sending the boat out for shell blast to remove the old paint from the bottom? Or should I just hide the floor and pray it stays put. LOL

might be fun to hide given that it's 5x16'. but that same fact will make it harder to steal or move inconspicuously. could you cut it to size and shape and then halve it lengthwise for ease of storage? this would let you lean it against a wall inside somewhere even if you're githt on space. would be easy to rivet back together at the joint using your scrappage underneath for reinf and to keep halves lined up

you'll need to fix any leaky rivets and do gluvit etc on inside of hull first. but aside from that, i see no reason you couldn't do it in that order. i'm not going to start on painting outside of hull til i get interior done. not sure shell blasting will take off the old paint....you might need a more aggressive blast media. but i guess it works for the military to strip aircraft, so....

Good weekend. I got the Z strips installed. The floor is cut & fit and the braces welded. No riveting of the floor yet I still need to install water pathways for drainage before foaming. Did spend all day Sunday removing old paint, I am still looking / thinking of colors, Got to make this old girl shine but there is still a boat load of work to do before that will happen.

Making quick work of it! Congrats! Keep on truckin!

I had layers upon layers of paint on my ole sea nymph... using stripper was getting on my nerves so i coughed up a view hundo and had a local guy soda blast the inside and outside of the hull for me. It caused no warping of the thin aluminum and got every bit of old carpet adhesive and paint off her... plus left a nice protective film on the bare aluminum until she was ready for paint. Just washed off with soap and water.

I will be following!

Re: Restore and Rebuild 74 Mariner 18?

Thank you for that info Piece715. I am thinking of having the bottom of the boat blasted with walnut shells just a little more aggressive then soda blasting. But first I am going to hit the bottom with stripper and get all the big stuff off then hit it with high preacher washer.
A test pc to check for warping.
Then blast. I can see Murphy look over my shoulder so it’s one step at a time and lots of pre planning.
That so fare has seem to keep him away. LOL

Any progress over the weekend? I agree Murphy can be a real... well seeing its a family site... you smell what im stepping in?! :D

Anyways... would definitely use a test piece with the walnut shells. I know its more gentle than sand but would still worry about warping. It sounds like you're taking all the right steps!

No work on the old gal last weekend. Me and the Supreme Commander went out.:D We had a blast spent most of the day and all of the night having fun at the Casino. We ended up spending about $100.00 bucks or so. :D We ended up winning over all that has to happen every now and then:rolleyes: This weekend back at the old boat .
