I have an opportunity to purchase a 1986 18' Boston Whaler Outrage (for $1,000). I am somewhat handy but very new to the boat world. The boat does not seem in bad shape but I have no idea what the cost or effort would be to re-gelcoat a boat like this. I do have pictures however:
  • The teak door for the two storage areas are rotted and gone.
  • Although many of these had reak gunwale caps this one is all fiberglass
  • Many chips and scraps with exposed fiberglass around transom
  • Missing rubber molding all around
  • Needs new
cables electronics etc

I don't mind and actualy look forward to working on this boat some...not sure I have the patience for gelcoat however, wondering what something like this would cost for little fiberglass repair and complete gelcoat? Would be a very nice boat -- and it is somewhat of a classic---want it for pleasure boating and fishing the bay, but small enough so I can move it in and out of some fresh water lakes as well.

What would it cost to gelcoat this entire boat (pay someone and DIY)?
I assume the rest of it (except perhaps the molding) would be straight forward but I have a lot of homework to do...what should I be looking for?

Please advise, bhuck

An Outrage 18 for $1,000? Holy cow, bhuck, what a deal!! Does it have power and a trailer?

Whatever is costs to restore it is worth every penny. In 8-9 shape with a good power plant it would be worth 8-10 Grand.

If you decide not to do it PM me.

Oh, and Welcome to iboats. :)

It would probably be easier, more cost effective and be just as good if you simply painted it with a 2-part epoxy paint. Make sure it's not waterlogged. Find out how much an 18 Outrage is supposed to weigh and then have yours weighed. A friend of mine had a 17 Montauk that had about 400 lbs. of wet foam in it. Not easy to fix...
