I recently purchased a 1973 18ft starcraft i/o offshore. It has a 120 hp mercruser in it. It was a project boat that the seller lost interest in. All I wanted was the trailer the boat was on. I was told that the i/o ran great but the tilt/trim did not work. He was right, it runs great. the boat is completely gutted including the i/o cover. I have very little invested in this boat. the hull is prefect just faded paint. Is this boat worth restoring and what kind of performance could I expect from the power plant. Is an i/o to ob transplant feasible? thanks, pappaw

Well , a picture is worth ...... As a rough , blind shot in the dark I'd say -1) a solid starcraft hull is a pluss--2)the motor runs well , thats a pluss--3) the boat is already gutted , allwoing personal creativity in the rebuild ;thats a pluss--The big key to the question is do you have the boats title / paperwork????? If so it sounds like a good project ,for you or someone else . if not for you sell it cheap , be honest about what your selling ,:)

I have the title and I'm a retired finish carpenter. Can you tell me anything about the performance of the 120hp powerplant on this large a boat?

I restored a 18' 1965 Starcraft Chiefton which is a aluminum cuddy cabin. I'm assuming yours is aluminum as well. If so, you should be reasonably powered as mine would top out at 45mph with a 115 outboard.

this boat is an open bow. As I stated I bought it for the trailer. I have about $100 in the boat and i/o. Family and friends say restore it. This is a huge alum boat and I"m not sure about the hp and how well it will perform for the family. I'm sure the i/o is worth something and if I scrap the boat the alum. alone will pay for the trailer and then some. I really would hate to do that, it's in great shape. thanks for the reply

Sounds like half the work has been done already. Finish it. Then sell it.

I figure $800-$1000 in parts and material not counting labor(I always get burned on labor) what will the boat bring on the market (just a guess)

Starcrafts are nice boats, look on ebay, even the old ones go for some bucks. It wouldn't take much to finish it off, but if you really just want the trailer then sell the boat, there is always someone looking for a project. but remember don't take less than scrap value for it, ( around here aluminum is $0.60/lb.)
