Hi guys. I have recently purchased a 50hp honda outboard to replace my blown 40hp yamaha. The motor is mint, however the cowling is harsh and needs redone as a fun project. I need some advice, its a plastic motor cover. I ordered some honda colored moeller paint. Im getting confused to whats the proper paint type to use? Id like to prime, paint and clearcoat the cowling. Is the moeller paint ok to use on plastic if I clearcoat it? And can I get an auto plastic primer from napa to use? Thanks for any advice, I have researched myself into confusion!

Good question. I'm not sure about plastic with Moeller paint. It is for bare metal, steel, iron, fiberglass, and wood. Krylon is a good plastic paint and comes in a ton of colours and clearcoat as well. I've used Krylon on marine plastic and it's surprisingly durable and strong. It doesn't scratch easy and it cleans easy as well. Good luck. On my last motor I used the roller and brush method, same as my boat, with marine enamel. Went on very well and looked good.

I agree with TC, the Krylon Fusion Plastic Paint is very good stuff. No primer needed, but that's if it going onto bare plastic. If it's painted then, I'd either stip it off or use a different paint.

Re: Restoring Honda Cowling

Thanks for the heads up and the pics, theres hope! I have sanded, acetoned, sanded, acetoned and wiped clean the cowling as it had old paint and peeling going on. I roughed it up as well on the last sand. I guess my concern is, I can use krylon, which is cheap and readily availiable, 2 of my favorite things. But the moeller paint is "Honda Silver". So I can prime it with krylon, I just need a good color match to the rest of the outboard. I was thinking that if I sanded it, did several coats of primer then used the moeller paint, that I should be good once I clearcoat it? But, I dont want to do all that work and find out in a week that it sluffs off as soon as I touch it. Thanks again!
