Welcome to the Starcraft club! Nice hull. What size is it? Looks over 20' to me. They are light so a 70 will push it but not real fast.

Great project boat at an even better price. Plus you already have the motor to bolt on her:)

You should be on the water before you know it with a little elbow grease, welcome to the Starcraft fleet.

I'd take the transom wood out and sand everything down first to see just how much corrosion you're dealing with. We had another Starcrafter with a sever corrosion issue. He welded or riveted (I forget which) a street sign. Problem solved.

Well im finally starting to fix Pajam, found some minor cracks and seperations inside the boat. Dont know how important these spots are but will try to fix. Any ideas fellow iboaters and fishermen.Took out wood flooring and foam, gonna replace. What is the thinnest wood i can replace the floor with for light weight, but staying strong has good support beams underneath right. Thanks for watching and helping with ideas.

Re: restoring my old new 71 starcraft center console

Your going to have to repair those cracks. I'd opt for welding them up, and adding two side supports or angles to that knee brace. That rear brace gives the transom most of it's strength. It looks to me like there was a lot of movement in the sheetmetal in that hull for a long time. It must have really took a pounding.

Interesting splashwell in that boat, I've had several 18' hulls now, several from 1967 to 1974, none have had those extra boxed in corner pieces that narrow the inside of the splashwell area. All of mine were just flat bent panels with no angular corner boxes.
I did have a 1995 18' that had those in it, it was also the same color blue. That boat had the same broken single knee brace and both gunwales were torn where they met the splashwell area. That boat had significant saltwater corrosion down the keel so I sold it as is.

All of my pre 1972 Starcraft aluminum hulls had their serial number plate attached to the inside of the transom near the top upper corner on the port side. The plate has always been attached to the wood itself with round headed tacks or 'rivets'.
All 1972 and up have had a small plate tack welded to the right outer transom in the wing area. Newer models didn't have this smaller plate but would have a larger, 4x5 or so sized Coast Guard certification plate.
If your state is like NJ, chances are somewhere along the line the title got lost, it got sold and someone got a reassigned title. Who ever assigned the title or did the inspection thought it looked like a 1971 for some reason. (I've got a 1964 that the state decided was a 1980 model).

I agree with reelfishin. That boat was abused to create all those cracks. Watch carefully for more. Welding and additional bracing should do it. Likely needs a new transom too.

Deck thickness is all over the place. Some want no give at all and go with 5/8-3/4. Some re brace the stringers with additional alum angle and go with 1/2. Avoid treated wood, does not like alum. Keep old deck for pattern.

If I had a $30000 boat I would not need to be here seeking advice, just hire someone to do it. ;)

Thats what im talking about, thanks people for responding.Man this hole in the water is gonna be great, but i need some serious weldin and bracin on those areas.I keep her in storage because i live in a mobile park and have no where to work on it here.Sorry progress is slow but workin on getting a welder to fix those things and next i will clean her out and check to see how fast she will fill up with water when i back her into lake on trailer. The transom wood looks like she was replaced not too long ago and wll leave her be for now.Once again thank you i really appreciate all your help fellow water lovers. Also is a picture of my 1964 shell lake that i use now,she is water tight and runs like a champ.Still havent found the vin plate on boat.

Nice progress JJacobs. We are all on a budget and thats why we share ideas. I would rather spend money on gas to run the boat, but I gotta get it together first. Did you get all the cracks and rivets sealed before the floor was installed? Keep the pics coming.

Re: restoring my old new 71 starcraft center console

I am taking it to the lake on nov-19 which is my birthday. The floor is loose still, so i will move all pieces to truck and check for leaks and mark them with spray paint can, hopefully there will be few. Then again the boat might fill up before i open my first beer!Ill take photos that day as it happens. Then ill put down foam and floor, screws and wiring for helm, then go fish out side the tires of the marina, with my transom mount trolling mtr,for my b-day im turning 40.Im bring some water proof jb weld along with me that says can be applied under water. So ill be rubbing that stuff all over anything that starts gettin wet.ill also have a high output bildge pump hooked up along with two batteries. One more thing, ill be running wood along the inside sides for more stability controling flexing.

Re: restoring my old new 71 starcraft center console

Well i never made it to the lake, but i did manage to build my center console almost!I found this pict of my boat back in its hay day!found out its a mariner 18ft,along with tons of other info.any ideass on how to bulid a frame inside to make stronger!still workin on top piece,I think ill make it bigger with angles to match the other pieces.I might enclose the rest and leave the top on hinges to open for repairs.little opening on bottom for batt to slip through.

The console looks very nice. What type of wood did you use?

Check out some of the brochures if you haven't already, there's a link in my signature to the thread.

I bought the wood at lowes for 20.00 for a 4x8 ft piece. Its rated for outdoors if used with protection, and has 5 layers of wood, thanks for the info on brochures.
