Restoring the emblems on a 1985 Evinrude 140

I have a 1985 Evinrude 140HP (looper) and want to restore the emblems on the motor cowl.

They are a metal emblem, and the letters are painted a flat white, I believe, and the background is a dark blue. The raised edges of the lettering is left as a chrome finish.

Has anyone ever re-painted theirs? What colors did you use, and what kind of paint? How did you mask the lettering, or did you use liquid masking? Airbrushed or plain brush or rattle cans?

These, of course, are out-of-date, and extremely hard to find. Mine are in good shape chrome-wise, and metal-wise, but the paint is gone and I am repainting the motor.

Depends on how perfect you want the emblems. I carefully repainted my 79 original emblems by hand with a small brush. Used some original paint from a spray can, sprayed into a cup. It's not the same as factory, but it's hard to tell if you stand 3' away from them.

I found the "appliques" new available, and bit the bullet and bought them. They only list "starboard", but looking at the originals, they are both the same, so I ordered two starboard pieces. I also ordered the front applique and plate, and will now order the rear "140" applique, also. By the time I'm done buying those appliques, it's gonna be $100 but probably worth it to save all the time and botched effort I've probably eliminated in trying to home-brew some solution.

Weren't you lucky! Nothing like NOS appliques.
