Restrictor / Regulator ... 2 burnt wires

Running a 96 merc 75 hp 2 cycle. Compression 110/105/105. Spark is strong. I am having troubles getting it started. It cranks and cranks but won't fire up (on the muffs). If the flywheel turns, does that mean the power head is OK? Or is there another way to test the power head??

Just found the restrictor / regulator has 2 wires (yellow) that are burnt at the connector. Down lower on the wire harness, there was one wire connector that was seperated (also yellow wire) or popped apart.

Does this mean the restrictor / regulator needs to be replaced? Or can the wires / connectors be replaced?? Any test possible? I have a volt meter but don't think that it reads ohms. Could a bad restrictor / regulator be a 'no start' reason? Any ideas or tell tales here?

The motor ran on lake for a few hours last week and may have run into some oil pump problems, starved for oil. Wondering if I replace the res/reg it might just lead to other replace items and other replace items.

Thanks.

zul, I have to say that NO, the rectifier/regulator is not for the ignition system but merely to charge the starting battery. So if the stator feeding the rectifier/regulator is burnt. You will not be charging the battery when it is running. I would most certainly check the stator to see if it is open or shorted. And then the rectifier and regulator next. I also would get a spark tester from the local auto parts store (really cheap) and see if your spark is jumping a 7/16" gap with a strong snap and blue spark for each cylinder. If those things are all good, then it is fuel delivery time. Carbs are next. And you also need to verify the fuel pump is good by removing the fuel line from the carb and crank over the engine to see if fuel streams out nicely. If the fuel pump is doing it's job, I'd say you need to focus on the carb(s) and time to install carb kits in them after a very good through cleaning... JMHO!

Thanks for the great post gm. Any links to video on testing the stator? Or testing the rec/reg?

I will have a friend helping me diagnosis and test tomorrow morning... wish me luck. We'll get this Merc running!!
