Re: Rethinking Christmas consumerism

I hope this post is ok, I don't intend it to be religious or political as I am neither political or particularly religious.
This was the very first sentence of this thread.

I want to publicly thank the involved moderators for deciding to allow it to remain open. I think there are a lot of folks who feel the same way I feel and if this can remain a positive discussion of those views then it deserves to remain open.

On the other hand, if it is going to be degraded into something that is negative, then I say lock it up and make it disappear. So can we stick to the discussion as presented. Please?

Re: Rethinking Christmas consumerism

Sorry guys, I edited out the last 9 posts they were unecessary.

Please remain civil to eachother and respectful of the diverse culture that makes up this great country.

Awww shucks, I missed out on the fun! ;)

The season is about love and caring, and the greatest gift of all to mankind. It is not about commercialism. At our church we are doing a gift exchange this year, but no bought gifts allowed, it is to be something made (baked, sewn, handcrafted ... whatever your talent ... made with love, not expensive ingredients). We are all looking forward to that. The money saved is to go in an envelope and placed on the Christmas Tree to benefit our mission work in Ghana, West Africa, and other ministries and outreaches to the less fortunate that we do or support. The Christmas Tree Envelope Campaign has been happening for the last 4 or 5 years now.

It is better and more rewarding to give a meaningful gift to those less fortunate than to recieve dust collectors that you will never use! Don't forget the meaning of Christ mas ... give the gift of love this year.

Re: Rethinking Christmas consumerism

Over the last few days.......

My lovely wife works for the County Women's Network which helps battered women, children, men (absolutely anyone) who is fleeing from or being abused. Needless to say ....helping people in bad times and situations.

The "shelter" every year opens it's doors and contributes free gifts, clothing and stuff that has been donated to assist those in need. The doors opened 2 days ago and my wife has come home exhausted. Stories of providing families in need with gifts and clothing....... many tears of joy and people being sincerely thankful...... she has seen many many people that she assisted through the year getting thru "battered" situations.

My wife has spent two days (and yes more planned) of just giving and helping. This has been very very rewarding to help other people. It certainly opens up your eyes and puts a prospective on how "in need" people can be.

Inspiration has come from this..... this year my wife Jenn and I are going to buy a box of "little stuff" every month and set it aside. We want to be able to add to the future give away next year to the people who need it.

Next time you see a super bargain or clearance item on sale or even a super sale on can goods..... buy a few extra and I personally recommend you donate the extra..... I can promise you will feel good and the person who receives it will also feel good.
