How Do People Afford Long-Term Travel After Retirement?

Hi everyone! I currently work in asset management at Wells Fargo, primarily serving high-net-worth clients. Lately, I’ve been thinking about an interesting question: How do people who spend their retirement traveling, living in RVs, or moving between different cities manage to enjoy that lifestyle while maintaining a steady cash flow?

My parents started experimenting with this lifestyle after they retired. Instead of staying in the same city year-round, they began spending time in different places depending on the season, weather, and their interests. Sometimes they travel by RV, while other times they rent a place and stay for a few months. Watching them has made me realize that retirement isn’t just about having more free time—it’s also about having a financial plan that allows you to actually enjoy that time.

From an asset-management perspective, retirement accounts are obviously an important part of the picture. But when someone travels long-term, expenses such as lodging, transportation, insurance, food, and unexpected costs can add up quickly. Simply relying on retirement-account withdrawals may not always be the most sustainable approach.

So I’d love to hear from people who are already living this kind of lifestyle: Do you rely mainly on retirement accounts, Social Security, investment income, or other passive income? Do some of you still work remotely or have part-time income?

If you travel extensively or live in an RV, how do you manage your budget and cash flow while still enjoying the freedom of retirement? I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences and strategies.

Wells Fargo has come up many times in the news and not in the good way. Doing a quick search I find WF has been fined over 200 times. Question; WF is not the worst at being fined that would be Bank of America, WF is 4th on the list. Why would you work for them?

I understand where you’re coming from. Wells Fargo has definitely had its share of problems, and I’m not going to pretend otherwise. For me, though, it’s more about the work I do and the clients I’m able to help. Every major bank has had regulatory issues at some point, so I try to look at the bigger picture rather than judge the entire organization by its headlines.

I would think the majority of people have worked for employers that they aren't in love with.
