Re: Retirement!

I retired at 53 and enjoying every minute of it.

The first thing you do is ... Unplug every clock because time doesn't matter anymore. :)

Second thing is ... Hide the "Honey To Do" jar !!!. :D

Third thing is ... Never run out of beer or whisky !!.

Forth thing is... Enjoy your retirement. :)

Remove all clocks except this one.

Re: Retirement!

I am over 50. Probably will never completely retire if I stay healthy that is. One thing that will keep me from doing so is the lack of money. So I will have to slow down but keep on working. The other is that I love to work. I like a balance of work and play. I am not some workaholic. Everything has to be balanced or I am very unhappy. Congrats on the retirement! I know some people who think about retirement a lot. I just never think about it. People are lucky to be able to retire in their 50s and even early 60s. If your main goal is to retire then the earlier the better because I have seen many sad cases 70s people retiring and then they quickly get a major illness and/or die. This is why it is so important to have a balance of work and play throughout your life because you never know if you will age gracefully. Over working in a stressful type job may actually cut your retirement short. My dad had quadruple bypass in his 50s and was dead by his early 70s. He was semi retired.

Re: Retirement!

I retired about 18 years ago from a management position in a major brewery.

The first thing I did was get better acquainted with my back yard and my dog. The second thing was to affiliate with a brewing school in Chicago, to keep the old passion alive. (I love good beer, the challenges of a brewery environment, and everything about process control.)

I discovered early that the best thing (to me) about retirement was the fact that I was no longer connected to a clock. No "get-ups" required when I feel like sleeping in, no late-night calls about operational problems, and - Praise the Lord! - I was no longer tied to a production schedule...! It was an amazing feeling!

Robert, go as far as you can, as far as your good health will take you. You (and I) are among the luckiest people in this world to make it to retirement with good health and enough money to enable choices. Congratulations, my man...!

Re: Retirement!

pulled the pin in april after 35 years in the steelmaking industry at 54 years old.for the last few years i was asked when i was going to retire and my answer was when im too sore to come to work every day and when i begin to hate the thought of going to work.ive already had 2 plus knee replacements already so the sore part was actually already there but was getting worse as more work was added to my job, so ,with a 25grand bonus and a full pension offered it was hard to say no to retirement this year.glad i did it!the biggest problem i have now is keeping track of what day it is.and the knees are better and so is my general health greatly improved as for 35 years i worked shift work and that takes a lot out of a person whether they know it or not.RETIREMENT=PRICELESS

Re: Retirement!

Well, obviously no one is going to give you the REAL practical advice you need, so even though I'm not retired, I guess it still falls on me somehow.

Step#1) Find the local McDonalds or ?? restaurant where at 06:00 there are at least 5 or 6 cars parked at and go introduce yourself.

Step#2) Go to the closest KMart and get several pairs of black, cotton knee-high socks and double knit shorts.

Step#3) Stop bathing so much.

Step#4) Every time you see someone under 50, say aloud "Sheesh....these damn kids today" and snort in disgust.

Step#5) Practice saying "Huh" or "What" very loudly every time your wife has something to say.

That should be enough to get you started. And remember, this retirement thing does not come naturally to some people, HOWEVER, we've all got it inside us so it may take a little practice.
