Max,

im here in Rhode Island as i see your orig from Conn? Sweet!
The motor is 1982 Merc 80 thunderbolt inline 4cyl blueband serial # 6175131 .
the motor would not go into forward only rev unless i removed the cam and spacer now motor is shifting great into for,rev,neu but the motor will jump out of water in rev? parts look worn and dried out that i removed !

The engine will shift great with the parts removed but you will lose the ability to lock the engine when in Neutral and Reverse. It sounds like there may be nothing wrong with your parts and that you have failed to align the cam correctly at installation of the LU. As well, both the boat controls and the LU must be in the same gear before installation which is Forward for early models and Neutral for later models which your is.

tks busy here pulling boats ready for Sandy!! i put the LU on w box in forward! i am going to try and put back in neu and see if i can get the Cam to work ! i had tryd to download that link from above but was unable to do so ( .so i have the part # for Cam do you know the spacer part # shown above ??

thanks so much i did find the parts and assembled in neutral and all is well ... another Nor Eaaster here aghh this sucks boats out of water w snow all over it best of luck and happy holidays Boat Safe
