greetings,

i have read numerous times in various posts 'rev the motor while in neutral'. i am curious as to how or IF i can even do this with my engine. '76 merc thunderbolt 1150. serial # 4395892. might be more info than needed but i thought i'd add it just to be safe. to rev in neutral do i use the throttle or is the act of revving done on the motor itself. reason i ask is cuz the only way i know to increase rpms is by pushing the throttle down which also puts the engine in gear. yes its a newbie question, and yes i am a newbie. thanks for the help.

Re: rev in neutral?

Not sure why you want to rev it in neutral, you shouldn't rev it too high while in neutral.

But, depending on your control there might be a fast idle lever or on some controls there is a button on the base of throttle handle that allows you to increase the throttle while in neutral.

Download this file and take a look on pg 17. You will see a diagram explaining the features of your controller.

To answer your question, yes you can throttle up the engine without putting it into gear. You use the fast idle lever (called neutral warn-up lever in the diagram). Also used while starting the motor. Move the fast idle lever to about the 1/2 - 3/4 up position, push and hold the choke button and turn the key. Once engine fires, adjust the fast idle lever to the desired RPM.

NEVER TRY TO MOVE THE MAIN THROTTLE LEVER IF THE FAST IDLE LEVER IS UP !!!

thanks for the info.
dont know why but i didnt realize to use the fast idle lever. pft. thanks again and for the diagram.

edit: whats the worst that would happen if the throttle was engaged while the fast-idle lever was up?

^^^^^^^^

What Marc said. You really "can't" activate both levers at once, but, if you really force it, something will break.
