Since I bough the 1986, 150HP, V6, Johnson outboard, the reveres never works. As I read here I take the shift cable off at the motor, and shift it manually, it didn?t works, each time I can hear load teeth noise. I think the problem with the gears. I did open the lower unit but the gears was sealed and I didn't know how to go forward to see if the problem with the gears. Any help will be appreciated and need the parts that need to replace.

Re: Revers Problems

If you haven't done it already, drain the gear oil in the foot and look for metal shavings on the plug or in the oil. If you don't have any gear oil drain out when you undo the plug then the foot may be toasted.

Re: Revers Problems

sounds like a bad clutch dog, if not a combination of the dog and rev gears. If you;re still able to use foreward without trouble i'd think your bearings would be alright. either way you;re definatly due for a lower unit rebuild, or just dont use reverse, but that's a pretty big liability. sorry to hear that, im currently in the same boat, a word of advise though, i was going to rebuild mine, until i discovered i can just get a rebuilt one on ebay in the 400 ballpark, which is about what parts would have come out to, why waiste my time. good luck.
