I was doing a little rewiring of the points and I pulled off the points plate. Now Im not sure how the spring goes back on under it. Its calleds the reverse cut-off spring ona 1969 evinrude 55hp. Is it suppost to clip on to the bottom of the plate or just sit on the crankshaft? Do I even need it?
Thanks

Those motors can, and sometimes do, run backwards. The reverse cut-out ring prevents that. You need to clean it and lubricate it VERY sparingly with some EP grease. It just clips around the crankshaft, with the curly loop between the nylon part and the wires terminal. When the motor runs in the right direction, friction keeps the curly loop against the nylon. But if it tries to run backwards, friction rotates the curly loop back against the wires terminal, shorting out the ingition and killing the motor.
