reverse gear pop up

I have an OMC, 4 stroke 9.9, outboard, which runs beautifully with one exception. When I put it in reverse gear and apply throttle, the engine pops up and the prop comes out of the water. I have looked at the lock down mechanism, and can see nothing that appears unusual, the engine locks OK in the up or down position. It will not budge when in the down position if you try to lift it, but put it in reverse and it comes right up. What's the problem here? Thanks, SJ

It is not locked down, that is the only reason it will kick back

Shifting linkage should lock motor down when in reverse. Should be fork of sorts that grabs part of the motor to keep it from lfting.

Sorry just noticed the motor. Might be wrong but most motors do have this feature built in.

Well yes, it appears not to be locked down,in reverse. If I place it in the running position, it locks in place, and if I try to lift it, it appears to be locked down, and you have to "unlock it" to raise it up again. SJ >>

Thanks your replys to my question. Upon closer inspection it appears that the "hooks" or keepers that the lock bar locks into are worn and not as deep as they should be. looks like a replacement for these would solve the problem. sm >>
