Reverse gear problems

Hey guys....I have a bit of a problem with my reverse gear on my 250 yammy 2 stroke. Before I launch or when I just get going on the water the reverse goes in fine but as the day progresses the gear gets really difficult to get in. Fwd goes in fine but the reverse I actually have to yank it in sometime putting the engine into I high rev when it gets in cuz I had to push on it so hard. Since I need to reverse the boat to park this makes it very difficult sometimes.

Help pls!

Re: Reverse gear problems

does it grind or is it just real stiff?

Have you serviced the lower unit?

What did the lube look like and did the magnet show metal?

A model # will give info about your motor so always post that.

Re: Reverse gear problems

If you are using reverse as a brake, don't shift directly from forward to reverse, and don't shift from fwd to neutral to reverse if the boat is still moving forward at any speed--the prop is still turning forward.

i wonder, also, if the shifting stiffness is in the controls or cables? Is there anything pushing on the cables that are bending them some? I had that happen once raising an engine against a cooler in the stern.

Ok I'll see the boat on Sunday I'll take some pics. I'm a new owner also. I'll want to look at the cables

I checked out my problem because I was stuck in reverse. I opened up the remote lever & there was a worn gear in there. I need a new remote lever

Re: Reverse gear problems

you dodged a bullet--better in the controls than in the LU!

What LU? I feel I may still have a problem. With the cables off on the engine I can push in fwd & it stays in but rev pops back into N. What is the best but affordable replacement for this control box? The old one is a yamaha 704.

Re: Reverse gear problems

where is the best place to look for a replacement 704 or a good aftermarket replacement? I would rather get a direct replacement so I don't have to cut/modify the space where it fits.

Ok...now I know what the LU is. I changed the remote box but now I am getting fwd to go in & throttle but the reverse is going in but no throttle only idle speed. The guy who installed it said he thinks it might be the LU but he did not want to touch it bcuz it's a newish engine & we want to check if it may still be under warranty.

Re: Reverse gear problems

if it's going in gear but not throttling up; I'd guess controls first and then linkage. If the controls are disconnected at the engine do the cables move freely? As I said, a crimped cable did to me similar to your problems.

Re: Reverse gear problems

LU shifting has no impact on throttle.
