50 hp Merc 500 4 cylinder 2 stroke, 1985. When engaging reverse from neutral, if engaged slowly it will make a grinding noise, but with a half decently quick move of the control box to reverse there is no grinding, is this characteristic of the engine or something more ominous? Does not jump out of gear, works fine otherwhise.

Thanks!

That is normal and when going from neutral to reverse you do want it to be a quik enough movement to minimize the grinding. Engaging slowly in reverse will cause premature wear on the gears.

Correct. When shifting out of neutral you want to "stab it" into gear.

-W

good point rodbolt !

Clams,Right on "stab it" into gear is the way to put it in gear. And from now on I'll tell my customers to do that.So many of them ease it into gear, and I cringe when they tell me.
DHP
