Reverse in an Evinrude Outboard

I have an old Evinrude 90 Hp outboard motor that seems to have a little<br />trouble getting into reverse. Sometimes it works an other times it doesn't.<br />Do you have any suggestions as to where I should look to find the problem?<br />I am not a novice with motors and transmissions, but I do admit it is not<br />with boat engines and transmissions. Any help or suggestions would be<br />greatly appreciated.

Hi, JDG.<br /><br />Not being a novice I am surprised that you haven't gotten a Repair Manual yet. It is usually the novices that set out to work on an outboard without one.<br /><br />Linkage adjustment is just one of the many tasks it can guide you in.<br /><br />Bottom of the page, click on Repair Manuals. I prefer the Clymer, but many like the Seloc better. Either will do the job for you.<br /><br />Good luck.

I agree that that is what I should do. But I don't want to have to pay the thirty dollars to fix what I hope is a simple problem. Like I said, It's over thirty years old!!

If you intend to keep the motor youll need that<br />manual.And it will be worth the investment in time saved, frustration and money.It could be a simple shift cable adjustment.I dont know your<br /> set up so cant be much help.<br /> If you had gotten a manual early on you might be on the water now.That would be worth the investment to me.I have 4 aftermarket manuals<br /> that cover most of my motors and many more.<br /> Total investment about 65 dollars.<br /> If you still dont want to spend the money try<br />the library.

JDG....it may help to know the year of your engine. Could you post it or the model number?
