89 60hp johnson My motor runs great only problem i am having is when I shift into reverse the gear lags for a couple seconds and the bumps hard into gear I just had the lower unit rebuilt with new clutch dawg fwd and rev.Could this problem be in the cable linkage??Whats most probable solution??

Hi, Joe.

I think it is more likely that the problem is in the linkage from the powerhead to the gearcase. That was disassembled when the work was done, the cable probably wasn't.

Good luck. :)

Joe ,You can check the shift cable adjustment in a few easy steps.Locate the shift arm and disconnect the cable clevis from it by removing its pin..While turning the prop to prevent binding, manually shift the gearcase using the shift arm into forward, neutral, reverse and then into neutral. Now with the throttle lever in its neutral position, place the shift cable clevis back onto the shift arm and insure that the pin hole is perfectly aligned. If not, adjust the trunion nut on the shift cable until it is.Then re-insert pin.If this turns out not to be your problem I suspect as JB suggests that something else is amiss in your lower unit job.

You perform the above procedure with the engine "not running" and preferably out of water.Once the procedure is complete ,the engine can be tested on the muffs and finally in the water. If the adjustment is out far enough to cause the delay in shifting to reverse that you mentioned in your initial post ,you will surely see the pin hole misaligned with the shift cable disconnected from the shift arm with the gearcase as well as the throttle lever in the neutral position.

Joe....just a question here...how do you shift?

Do you slowly go into gear or do you "snap" the control into gear?
