Reverse is there, BUT not!

Ok, here is my delema.

LU will shift into F-N-R not problem.

with the shift cable disconnected, and me manually moving the shift arm, it will only shift into F-N , but no reverse. It's like there is not enough leverage. Or the spline are worn that much that there is too much 'play' between shifting.
Has anyone ever had this problem?

Any idea's?

I'm probably giving bad advice (not knowing any better) but what happens if you assemble the motor with the lower unit and the helm both in reverse? Or, can you assemble it as it is now, but turn shift shaft on LU one tooth closer to reverse? Grasping at straws :)

Re: Reverse is there, BUT not!

AMD thanks for the reply.
I have tried it in every combination many times ( 1 whole day infact )
If I reassemble in reverse it's fine. But when I move to neutral it clicks quite loudly out of reverse and into neutral. The prop spins freely like it should. Push up into forward and all is fine. Back to neutral and all is fine. Pull back to reverse and stays in neutral.
I'm thinking of spot welding more 'meat' onto the splines then filing down smooth, to eliminate some play that may be present.
It only need to turn like another 1-2mm an im sure it will engage.

anyone else?

cheers

Re: Reverse is there, BUT not!

what motor? I have a V150, and my first thought was what AMD said... that maybe when you had LU off, the shift shaft got turned a bit, so that it went together shifted one tooth over. (?) I had a sort of similar problem with mine... went into FWD fine, into N fine, but was just 1/2 engaging in REV... If you went into REV and kept it at idle, the clutch dog would knock.. turned out it was the shift cable just a bit out of adjustment... a bit of tweeking on the adjustment on the cable end (under the cowling, left side of motor) got things perfect.

But... you say it has same problem even without shift cable connected, so I guess it's unlikely to be your problem...

Have you had the lower unit off lately? Or was it working one day, then not the next?

Re: Reverse is there, BUT not!

This sounds similar to a problem I struggled with a while back. Turned out it was the remote control. There are cam plates in the control that move the cables when you move the shifter. I disconnected the cables at the engine and worked the remote shifter - cables moved as they should. Hooked them back and still would not go to reverse. Disconnected cables from the remote control and worked them by hand - all worked fine - even took it out a couple of times using just the cables shifting by hand. The problem was that the cam plate in the control along with bushings had worn enough that when you tried to shift to reverse, the remote handle would move, but the pressure required to actually move the shift assembly in the motor was too great for the control to move. The worn cam would just slide by in the controller without moving the cable for reverse. Ended up replacing the controller with a used one and all was fine. Just a thought you might want to investigate.

Also, trying to shift into reverse without the engine running or the prop turning is a no-no as it can mess up the clutch dog or the remote controller.

Hope this helps.

I too had a recent problem like this that was solved by installing the lower unit while in the forward gear position (both controls and lu in forward). Then it all worked just fine. This was also the directive in my shop manual for my 93-135.
TH
