Reverse Lock is bent and will not engage

1974 mercury 50 hp : Is it possible that because of the reverse lock is damaged and bent to no return that i wouldnt be able to put the motor in reverse? it just revs not engaging and clicks when i hand turn the prop could this be ?

There is a nylon (Or alloy) cam on the upper Shift shaft.If it is heavily scored or damaged, it can prevent the hooks from engaging and the shaft from rotating.Spray lots of lube down the shift shaft to loosen it up, faling that, remove the L/U and replace the cam. BTW Never force the shifter into gear, as it will damage the cam, ease it in instead.
