1977 Johnson 175-
Seems to slip in reverse-
No backward motion in idle & i have to "gun" it to make it "catch" & back up
In forward its fine-
Any ideas?

Kind of up date-
Put it in barrel & put in reverse - hear a "not" clanking noise but defently like something loose noise- noway near the prop revolution at idle as in forward :(

Do you hear any noises? Check lower unit oil for metal particles, check prop hub for slipping. Just thinkin.

Thanks-
No noise (i have a hot foot BTW)
It just feels like it slips into reverse when i "gun" the gas a bit like its slipping into reverse - after it actually moves back does'nt seem to have much power at all-

you have a pointed bow, reverse is flat transom, also the prop wash is against the stern. remember reverse is not a brake.

my pontoon reacts much more quickly in reverse, than my monohull, reason, prop has clear thrust on the toon.

Yeah, you have that thing jacked up pretty high, don't you? What tashasdaddy said, plus when you are in reverse you are sucking exhaust into the prop instead of water.

you want to really watch slamming it in gear at a high RPM, you can do ALOT of damage really quick.

The gears in an outboard are tuning if the motor is running and the clutch dog slide between the gears on the prop shaft, by putting it in gear at a hihg rpm(over 1000) you are really banging the dog and gears and they don't like that.

Sounds like an adjustment problem to me, goes into to forward but not reverse,I would look at adjusting the shift cable a bit.

Thank but you are all missing my picture-I don't explain to clearly
At a dead stop - put into reverse (again at idle) it will not move at all until you pat the hotfoot to give it some rpm's then it will feel like the prop will slip into reverse motion & move
Maybe a hub problem?

AH, a hot foot, that changes things a little, I thought you were giving it more gas until the shift cable caught up then it banged into gear.

Is this a new problem or the boat has always done it, maybe put it into reverse and go back and see if the prop is turning.

It could still be an adjustment like it is barly catching reverse but won't go in till you apply some throttle

No, if you had a slipping prop hub it would be giving you trouble under power in forward gear---not reverse.

Try disconnecting the shift cable at the motor and manually shift it to see if it is a motor or control problem.

On muffs it gets right into reverse without a sound & prop turns idleing just like in forward
