i just took my boat out to switch trailers, seems reverse does not work. forward was fine for the quick drive around the launch area. I brought and checked some online stuff, said put it in gear and turn the prop. When i do this it does not turn the engine, I can sorta hear it trying to engage(forward is fine). When I started it up out of the water, and put it in reverse nothing, I rev'd it up a bit and it would turn the prop a bit, doubtful its not being engaged properly.

could this simply be cable adjustment? or clutch dawgs? anyone have a manual for this engine? exploded view of the bottom end , can I just drop the lower unit and check this, or does the lower unit itself need to be taken apart? Not entirely sure of engine year, its mid 80's (no oil injection).

please help!where should i start? reverse is nice to have

Disconnect the shift cable, and shift manually for the re-try. Will quickly tell if the cable is mis-adjusted.

You can drill into the exploded drawings on this site...shop.evinrude.com.

thank you, I just found that site reading another post, that helps a lot to understand the setup. I have to figure out what year this motor is exactly. Ebay'ing a lower end might be in order :(

Re: reverse on johnson 140 hp

what is your model #? when were the control cables last replaced? when old they wear, forward is a pulling of the cable, reverse is pushing, which is harder on the cable to push.

Re: reverse on johnson 140 hp

its a johnson seahorse v4, 140 hp.

where do I find the model plate on the engine so I can identify year? all I found on top was c8091645, everything else looks like part numbers.

ok reverse was just because of the cable, adjusted it a bit, went into forward and reverse and neutral no issue. YAY, thanks guys :D
