Hi, This is my 1st post on this site! Thanks in advance for your help!!

Setup:
16' Geneva fiberglass runabout
Volvo Penta AQ130/270
4 cylinder
Prop: 15 15

When I put the boat in reverse (around 2000 rpm)it'll start to splash water all over the back seats of my boat and the boat wont move an inch.
If I barely throttle it (just above idle) I'll get a little bit of reverse movement but only if I keep wheel turned all the way starboard.

Yes the lower unit is completely down and in the water.

What do you think? I'm clueless. (new boater)

Are you sure that it is STAYING down? i.e. when you look at it I am guessing you are in neutral, but when you put it in reverse have you looked at it and determined that it is not popping up?

Re: Reverse problem

I'm pretty sure it's not popping up, but it's possible. However, I think I would feel it popping up and I am sure I would hear an audible difference if it were popping out of the water.

Re: Reverse problem

Yeah, I would think you should be able to feel and hear it too, but depending on how that Volvo protects itself from strike damage, I honestly don't know what it would feel like. MAynot "pop" at all may be smooth for all I know. Worth checking anyway as the symptoms match with what I think would happen.

When down, what is the relation of the ventilation plate to the bottom? It should be about flush with the bottom and all of the propeller should be below the hull. I doubt it is mounted too high to get SOME movement in reverse, but you've got to start somewhere . . .

BTW, I have never had to use 2200 RPM in reverse. Something pretty serious is going on here, whether height, or "pop" up or the prop is spinning on the hub (don't understand why it would go forward). BTW, do you know if it is going into gear all the way? Seems like it would make some noise etc., but this could be shift linkage type stuff too.

Had a similar problem on my 270 and didn't hear any popping up noise except the splashing you mentioned and no real movement in reverse. Fixed mine by getting several springs and the two hooks that lock the drive into reverse replaced. Works fine now.

Welcome to iboats :)

Joe,

I think you and Quiet might be right. Can you please elaborate on your fix? Where did you put the springs and hooks? Do you have any pictures you can show me. Thanks a bunch guys!

Re: Reverse problem

It's easy to check. When the boat is on the trailer, lower the leg completely - put it in reverse (engine OFF). Try and lift the leg manually. Does it come up?

Re: Reverse problem

Follow Dunaruna's advice to check if you can lift it up manually. If you can, then some work needs to be done to the locking mechanism, and I can send you the pics. I decided to let the marina mechanic fix it rather than do it myself...a little expensive though mostly in mechanic time. Yet it needs to be fixed for safe maneuvering!

Joe

Re: Reverse problem

I'll try Dunaruna's advice. Also, Joe, did your mechanic fix the springs that connect to the pawls?

Question: I'm not sure what that bar is called that holds the lower unit up when it's being trailed, but I think it may have been installed wrong by a previous owner. This "bar" seems to be holding my outdrive up ever so slightly when I tilt the outdrive all the way down. The out drive looks like it could tilt down another 5 degrees but this bar seems to be keeping this from happening. Any Ideas?
BTW, Do any of you guys have an exploded diagram of the lower unit and it's parts for the 270? With a diagram I could speak a little more intelligently to you guys!

Thanks a bunch for all of your help!

Re: Reverse problem

So Joe, were your pawls damaged? My pawls look like they're in good shape just not catching. You think I'll need to replace them too?

Thanks for getting me the link to the breakdown of how the pawls are supposed to work. I'll be workin on it tomorrow, I'll let you know what I figure out.

Thanks!!
