I have a I believe a 1975 Mercury 20HP outboard that I bought about a month ago. It was working fine and latley I am having problems getting it to go into reverse if it goes into reverse at all. It goes into forward great and has plenty of power. It has been modified to have throttle and shifting to a box instead of shifting on the side with the lever. When you put it in reverse, it rivs up, but seems as thought it is just not going into gear. The lever moves as if it should be in reverse, but nothing. What could be the cause of this and even bigger, am I boned? I can get a serial number if that helps. I would just like to know if that means the lower unit is shot and can you loose just the reverse? Anyone can email me with help at: jasonandjamie1229@msn.com

Thanks alot guys!
Jason

Re: Reverse Problems

Copied this from a search, one of Laddies answers to a similar question, hope it helps.
LADDIES SAID:
It sounds like a bad shift shaft if the linkage at the top of the shaft where the cable attachs is moving, drop the lower unit and see if it shifts with it out of the engine, look for stripped splines or a twisted or broken shaft
