I have a 70Hp Mercury Outboard and have had problems with my reverse. It seems like it goes into reverse but when I try to give it some gas the engine over revs but no movement but when I just put it in reverse and give it no gas if there are no current i might get some movement.

Things I know:
1)when out of water and put shifter in to reverse prop is locked and seems like it is engaged.

2)when out of water and on the muffs you can put it in reverse and prop will spin and seems to work fine.

any Ideas.????

Re: reverse problems

are you sure you are shifting all the way into reverse? could ba as simple as a cable adjustment, i don't hear of many spun props in reverse. or could be as bad as a clutch dog. lets see what the others think.

Re: reverse problems

sounds to me as a simple adjustment aswell, try adjusting the clutch rod adjuster by the lower unit.

Re: reverse problems

it does go in to reverse it's seems when I give it more gas something gives and it goes in and out of gear....only in water but on land works fine...no Drag...so when telling my motor guy about the problem he can't seem to understand.

Re: reverse problems

Have you taken the lower unit off lately? Maybe something misaligned? You might also have some worn parts like I did. That was a headache for this newbie! But Laddies helped thru it :)
