Reverse problems.

I replaced the water pump in my lower unit today. It is a 87 alpha one going into a Mercruiser 120. I had no problems with any of the work. However, it doesn't seem to go into reverse now. I did this with the outdrive on the boat and and made sure to put the control in forward. I also put the lower unit in drive by turning the shift selector clockwise and then held prop shaft counterclockwise while putting back together. I am sure that it did not slip out of gear. Did the spin the prop check and spins freely in reverse, locks counter-clockwise and clicks clockwise in forward, but clicks in both directions in reverse. I don't know what may be causing this. Any help would be appreciated. Could it be that somehow the shift shaft didn't line up correctly even though it was in reverse?

Re: Reverse problems.

Raise the drive up and see if the shift shafts are together properly.

Re: Reverse problems.

Thanks for the quick reply. Went out and checked it. All is lined up properly. With control unit in reverse it is close to catching, when i put just a little extra pressure on the shift shafts in locks right in. Could this be a simple cable adjustment? If so how would I go about doing that?
